Pancakes Amsterdam Tips (3)

Pannekoekkelder: Dutch Pancakes

Dutch pancakes are not what might typically expected by tourists - not a stack, no syrup - just a large (anticipated satellite reception ) pancake almost as thin as a crepe, just eggs flour and a little something for taste, intended for lunch or perhaps dinner and not breakfast. And offered with an astounding collection of fillings ranging from healthy fruit to sweets to assorted meats. The menu was a crowded four pages, and offerings are far wider than just pancakes, almost a diner.

The place was jampacked with locals, few if any tourists, a good place for a quick lunch, nothing fancy at all. Table service was offered, really slow - the impression lingers that locals received faster service than obvious foreigners. The internet incredibly offers no further information about this restaurant - just one reference to its location in a narrow alleyway off Kalverstraat, but no name or further information. This was our introduction to a Dutch favorite - a filling and satisfying cheap lunch.

And with appreciation to pieter for supplying the correct name and address for this venue.

Pancakes! Amsterdam: Dutch pancakes

I was told I could not leave Amsterdam without trying Dutch pancakes for breakfast one day. Our hotel recommended Pancakes! Amsterdam, supposedly one of the best in Amsterdam. It is a tiny restaurant located on one of the 9 Little Streets and one has to queue outside to get a seat. It took us perhaps half an hour, but it was certainly well worth the wait. The staff is super friendly and the ambiance is like that of a kitchen in someone's welcoming home. Dutch pancakes are something between French crepes and American pancakes and can be savoury or sweet. I chose sweet and it was quite tasty!

Pancakes!: Cheerful Cozy Pancake place near Prinsengracht

Be sure to have a real Dutch Pancake while you're in Amsterdam! They make an excellent lunch or light dinner. A Dutch Pancake is somewhere near the middle of a spectrum between American Pancakes and French crepes - and they go very well with both fruits (i.e. bananas) and savories (ham, bacon, etc.) "Pancakes" is a cheery bright and efficient pancake house near the Prinsengracht. It seemed to have a good mix of tourists and locals when I was there, and was excellent value as well.
