Tempo Doeloe Tips (5)

Tempo Doeloe: SUPER HOT!!!

An authentic Indonesian cuisine from Java, Sumatra, and Bali. A small space with attractive decor and fine china. You will have to ring a bell which I found amusing. Informed servers, friendly and accomodating. The food is consistently good with well balanced spicing, however beware - if it says super hot it is SUPER HOT!!! .

For a true taste of Indonesia, consider a rijsttafel, the 'rice table' that features a variety of savory dishes.

Main courses 14€-25€ ; rijsttafel 27€-35€ ; fixed-price menu 27€-43€

Tempo Doeloe: Rijstaffel done right!

I enjoyed the best Nasi Koening I've had in Amsterdam here at Tempo. Very small, and with an authentic and unpretentious ambiance. The rijstaffel is said to be made onlyusing traditional methods with only the freshest of ingredients... and I would have to agree! Loved it! Reservations are preferred, but I was able to get a seat when I just showed up...

Favorite Dish Nasi Koening... the best I've had in Amsterdam! Too much to list! Look at their special menu selections!

Tempo Doeloe: Spicy and delicate taste from Indonesia

The restaurant is small but as you enter (ring the bell first) the atmosphere looks nice and the smell is delicious. We did not expect to find it very crowdy even on Monday, though ti was very recommended.

As there are so may...

As there are so may restaurants in Amsterdam it is difficult to make a choice!! The Utrechtsestraat is a street just off Rembrandtplein with a wide selection of restaurants. For a nice French dinner go to L'Express and Sluizer for Dutch/French. Sluizer is always very busy and a lot of people eat here and go to some theatre afterwards so dinner is served very promptly. The food is very good. Also very tasteful: Indonesian food, go to Tempo Doeloe, the best in Amsterdam.
L'Express: the restaurant is filled with train related items, such as old suitcases, luggageracks, posters with oldfashioned train-advertisements etc... Makes it a very cosy restaurant.

Favorite Dish L'Express: There are 2 different menus at different prices with a wide choice each. I have to say that each time we have dinner here it is always excellent, whatever we have. Mind the potato side dish!! Very good and do not forget to have coffee, the complimentary chocolate is too good to miss!!
Sluizer: Entrecote with mustard and caramelized brown sugar!!! I don't know if this is one of their regular dishes but it's gooood!
