Entrance: 15 euros (in 2010)
What you get: A lot of Heineken advertising, a childish attraction in which you are a virtual bottle, and three beers along the "experience". As a souvenir you can keep wearing the green plastic Heineken bracelet you get at the entrance...But better get rid of that bracelet as soon as possible, because it shows to the world that you were stupid enough to visit this tourist trap.
What could have spiced things up a little bit, would be some space dedicated to the dramatic kidnapping of Freddy Heineken in the 1980's...Unfortunately, not a word about this...
Too much money for too little experience! Especially when the weather is nice, it is so much better to spend your time outside on a terrace drinking a Grolsch than inside this silly Heineken commercial.
Unique Suggestions The only authentic part of the brewery is the historic brew room. The same as in any other brewery...
Fun Alternatives A much more interesting brewery to visit is the local brewery "BROUWERIJ 'T IJ".
FREE guided tour every Friday and Sunday at 16.00h. See their website for information on guided tours for groups. The tasting room is open from 15.00h-20.00h, with a nice terrace, and very popular with the locals (in contrast to the Heineken Experience, where you will only see other tourists).
They serve a variety of home-made beers, which are also a lot more tasty than the horsepiss Heineken is serving ;-)
Also a great opportunity to see the highest wooden WINDMILL of the Netherlands, called "De Gooyer", which is directly next to the brewery 't IJ.
Brouwerij 't IJ
Funenkade 7 Amsterdam
Ok good & bad - it takes a while to go through but you do get free beer & a glass to take home.
On this experience you get to
"BE THE BOTTLE"
Unique Suggestions Good for if its raining
Holland Experience shows you a 30 minute 3D show about the Netherlands. You will see a film about the country, but you will get no explanation just the impression of pictures and some effects. Although you can get a discount with your Amsterdam pass (I think it was 25% less), 8,50€ for this show is far too much.
Fun Alternatives If you want to get a good impression about the whole country in 30 minutes, visit Madurodam in den Haag. It's only slightly more expensive (12,00 EUR) but it is far better: You can spend half a day there and the money there is used for caritative purposes.
It was described to us as a 3D overview of Holland, what we got was a tourist video with some cheesey effects. Not worth it.
Located at Waterlooplein 17.
Unique Suggestions The best thing I got from here was a yellow pages for Amsterdam designed for tourists. It was free and gave me a list of resturants and other services in that country.
There is NOTHING to experience at this "museum", it's built to take up your time. Unless you are a HUGE fan of Heineken beer, it's best to skip this attraction. You pay 8 euro to get in, and all that pays for is the four beer stations you go to during the tour. The "amusement" rides are an absolute joke, and honestly, the place just isn't worth it. I wish I could take back that moment of my life, and more importantly, get a refund of 8 euro.
Unique Suggestions If you MUST go here, then enjoy the beer and also know there are two camera's located in the museum that are linked together. You can see other people further ahead in the exhibit. You spend about 5 minutes trying to determine if the people you are seeing are real people. It's quite hilarious. My brother and I ended up "playing" hide and go seek with a couple of people at the other camera location. It was fun!
Fun Alternatives Go drink a Heineken at a pub, it's cheaper!
HEINEKEN MUSEUM. I don't know if it is a tourist trap because some people enjoyed it but i personnaly think it was really dull. It's a huge building but there is nothing worth seeing inside. There is a really stupid show where you can experience the life of an heinenken bottle!!! Unless you are a big Heineken fan, do avoid at all cost!
PS: some people wrote to me telling me the admission fees are now less than they used to be.
