't Kaaswinkeltje (and others): Everybody buy "Cheeeeeeeeese"!

    by King_Golo Updated Apr 19, 2016

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

A visit to Gouda without buying some cheese is futile - after all, the town is renowned worldwide for its Gouda cheese, even if it is mostly produced around the town, but not in it. Still, there are cheese shops all over town, and one I particularly liked was 't Kaaswinkeltje (The Small Cheese Shop). The smell of different types of cheese is overpowering the moment you enter it, but then you discover cheese wheels piled high, one stacked upon another, and each one looking more delicious than the next. Of course you won't have to buy a whole wheel - one of them weighs about 11kg, and that's a hell lot of cheese to eat even for the biggest aficionado -, but you can get smaller chunks, too. We were served by a nice young "kaaswinkeljufvrouw" (literally: "cheese shop miss"), but even if it had been a grumpy old man, I would have loved the shop.

What to buy: Gouda cheese - 't Kaaswinkeltje specialises exclusively in farm-made Gouda cheese which you can't order online, but have to get in the shop. The cheese is also not exported.

What to pay: depends on the size of cheese

Address: Lange Tiendeweg 30, 2801 KH Gouda

Directions: between the canal "Blekerssingel" and the market square

What to buy: The Syrup waffles, made from two round waffles with a caramel filling, are another specialty of Gouda. Stroopwafels were invented in Gouda in 1784.
Sometimes nuts or other flavors are added to the filling.
The traditional dutch way to eat the stroopwafels is with a cup of coffee or tea and place the stroopwafel on top of the hot cup in order to soften it up.

What to pay: Even as less as EUR 1- for a pack of 10 Syrup waffles.
