When you climb up the St. Jan tower you'll find this sign, put up by the Church Council to warn you for the loud noise that the bells make on the whole hour.
It says "WARNING. Being near the church bells during ringing is life-threatening.
The Church Elders."

Gouda seems to have a high rate for petty crime. That's what a council man told us.
When you park your car, make sure everything of value is taken out before you leave it.
If the police notices a broken into car, it is towed away and will cost you about € 170 to get it back from where it is kept.
But if you look at the picture, you'll see things could be much worse.
The policestation is on the Houtmansgracht.

For the most part, Gouda is a relatively safe city, but you do need to be careful just like anywhere else. If you are out late, stick to the well lit areas and avoid the narrow laneways and large groups of foreign nationals which aren't always so welcoming.
Mosquitos - I am prone to being bitten and one night I managed to get over 50 bites on my legs and arms. They drove me mad the next day. Make sure that you put insect repellent on during the day as well - just in case you end up staying out after dark.
*Remember* with so much water around it is an ideal breeding gound for the little blighters!
