This wooden church was originally built in the year 1150. It was ruined by fire some years ago and has been totally rebuilt in its original form.
I can recommend a trip to see this church if you are in Bergen as there are not many buildings left that show this type of original Norwegian architecture.
A nice short trip you can do in Bergen is to go to visit the old Stave Church at Fantoft, originnaly built in Fortun in Sogn in 1150 and moved to Fantoft in 1883. It burnt down on the 6th June 1992. Now the church has been rebuilt just as it was before the fire. The crox in front of the chruch was made in 1050 and come from Sola in the Rogoland.
This lovely stave church is not the original medieval one :(
It burnt down in 1992 and now has been rebuilt just as it was in 1150 year :)
anyway it's still beautiful and worth to see :)
It's situated in small park in Fantoft (a little town near to Bergen). To get there, you just have to catch a bus to Fantoft, and then follow the signs or ask the local people. Despite it's quite easy, my boyfriend and I had a little problem to get there, but it was worth that effort ;-)
The Fantoft Stave Church is one of the famous wooden churches of the Vikings. In Norway there are about 25 such left and in northern Europe about 5-6.
Exactly this church dates from the 12th century but after a fire it was completely destroyed and rebuilt in 1992.
Fantoft Stave Church

In a park in the outskirts of Bergen, lies a nearly-exact replica of a 12th century stave church. The church actually came from Sognefjord and was moved in 1884. According to the tour guide, someone from a Satanic cult had destroyed the original and it was reconstructed in the 1990s. It is quite a bit off the beaten path if you only have public transportation, but is certainly worth a visit if you do not have any opportunities to see stave churches.
Personally I think Stave churches are UGLY!
But I was dragged to see this one. Cause it's so typical in Norway blah blah blah.
Some people do find them interesting though . ..
