Fountain of Three Carniolan Rivers

The Fountain of Three Carniolan Rivers, which is located at the end of the Mestni trg square and is also known by the name of The Robba Fountain, is one of the best known monuments of Baroque Ljubljana. It was created by the Venetian-born sculptor and architect Francesco Robba (1698-1757) between the years 1743 and 1715. Robba, who spent most of his life in Ljubljana, is considered to be one of the Baroque Ljubljana's greatest master sculptors working in stone.

The Robba Fountain is modelled on the famous Roman fountains. The sculptures of the three river gods decorating it most probably represent three rivers in the Province of Carniola, namely the Sava, the Ljubljanica and the Krka rivers. The ground plan of the fountain is shaped in the form of the ancient three-leaf town seal of Ljubljana. The Fountain of Three Carniolan Rivers is Robba's last creation in Ljubljana. Having finished his works on the fountain, the impoverished Robba moved to Zagreb.

Robba Fountain

Built in 1751 by Francesco Robba, the great master of a Ljubljana sculptural studio in the first half of the 18th century. It symbolises the three rivers: Sava, Krka, Ljubljanica and it is characterized by the figures of the three sturdy, lively tritons with oval jugs in their hands and dolphins at their feet.

The monument is inspired after a fountain in Rome (in Piazza Navona) and had a quite scandalous birth in 1751. Some of the marble taken from Italy sank near Trieste -- that is why only the figures were made of Carrara marble, and the artist, Francesco Robba, could not keep the deal.

Robba Fountain

In Mestni trg, there is a fountain called the Robba Fountain, apparently modelled on a similar one in Roma. I remembered it from my first trip, but it has since been encased in a mini greenhouse to protect it...I think I preferred it without this....

Robba Fountain in Mestni trg

Modelled after a roman fountain, the gushing urns represent the rivers of the old Austrian province of Carinola - Sava, Krka and Ljubljanica. The fountain - 1741- sits in the middle of Mestni trg in front of the Town Hall/Magistrat (late 15th century).

Fountain of Carniolan Rivers

The Robba Fountain of Carniolan Rivers is an interesting baroque monument in Ljubljana. The fountain was built by the architect and artist Francesco Robba and it is 10 metres high. If you look closely you will notice that this is the smaller cousin of another better known fountain: the one in Piazza Navona in Rome. There's also an allegorical meaning behind: it's placed in a part of town where three main streets meet, and it's supposed to represent It three rivers: the Sava, the Krka, the Ljubljanica, all three represented by the figures of the three tritons with jugs in their hands and dolphins at their feet.
