Vintgar Gorge Tips (35)

A paradise for hikers : Vintgar Gorje

A ravine with steep mountains giving way to the gorje , with the bubbly gushing Radovna river splitting it into two, the Vintgar Gorje trail of waterfalls, stream, gushing pools and the water trapped still at certain corners is a breathtaking hike to enjoy.

We were their in the autumn, September 2015, and the water was full , the leaves green and the vegetation thick.
It is a safe and easy walk, does not need any particular physical capabilities. One of my friends had a tour year boy whom she carried all through .

This was part of my Italy Slovenia - Croatia tour. We also sneaked into Austria for a day.
My detailed info on the hiking trip to Vintgar Gorje ( September 2015) is found at the below Link.

The mouth or the entrance to the gorje is about four and half kilometres from Lake Bled.
This is a must do activity from Lake Bled.

As if nearby Lake Bled weren't spectacular enough!

A spectacular way to spend a morning or afternoon. At every bend along the boardwalk is another composition of worn rocks, crystal clear water, lush vegetation and an occasional fish. The boardwalk is narrow at some points, so leave bulky backpacks in the car!

Walk through the Vintgar Gorge!

In 1893 the gorge was opened to the public. It is created by the Radovna river, which runs through the gorge. Every winter takes its toll and people have to rebuilt or restore the path through the gorge.

It is breathtaking, the water is very clear.

Opening hours:
The Gorge is open every day from 8.00 to 19.00.

Admissions 2014:
Adults € 4,00
6-14 yrs. € 2,00

A stunning stroll through Vintgar Gorge

Such is the beauty of Bled that it would be easy to confine yourself to the town and its lake, in which case you would run the risk of missing out on the utterly gorgeous Vintgar Gorge.

The gorge is located about 4km from Bled - it is possible to walk, or to catch a bus, and for those with cars, there's ample parking at the head of the trail.

The Radovna River has carved a deep gorge into the limestone, and falls as a series of cascades, interspersed by deeper pools. The water is icy blue/green and crystal clear, and where the water is calmer, you can spot trout lurking in the depths.

The area is thickly wooded with deciduous trees - primarily beech, I think, though I speak under correction - that are particularly gorgeous in autumn when the leaves are turning.

The area has been popular with tourists since the end of the 19th century, and the infrastructure is excellent. The trail is well constructed, and comprises sandy paths interspersed with railed wooden boardwalks along the rockier sections. The gradient is gentle, and so is accessible for small children and more active elderly people. Whilst I wouldn't go so far as to say that it was wheelchair accessible, you could certainly negotiate it with a pushchair (provided that you were willing to manhandle it once in a while). The trail is 1.6km long, and although it is possible to return by other routes, most visitors return the way the came: with scenery this beautiful, that's no great hardship!

At the end of the trail, overlooking the waterfall, there is a small kiosk serving drinks and snacks and a deck area where you can sit. About halfway along the trail there is also a picnic table nestled in under an overhanging rock, which is a lovely place to stop and contemplate your glorious surroundings.

We visited whilst it was raining, and provided that it's not absolutely bucketing down, the tree canopy and the narrowness of the gorge provides reasonable protection from the weather.

It's difficult to think of any way that the Vintgar Gorge could be improved as a tourist destination - it's really that good!

Walk to Vintgar Gorge

If the weather is good and you want to take a long walk, a trip to Vintgar Gorge is definitely a good choice. About a 1-hour walk from Bled, you make your way through about 2km (1 mile) of spectacular waterfalls and scenery. The wooden walkways suspend you above the action as the river Radovna rages below.

Entrance to Vintgar costs EUR 4 per person. There is a parking lot at the site, but note you will be required to climb stairs to make your way through the gorge area. At the bottom end of the gorge, there is a cafeteria where you can buy light snacks and refreshments.

Wooden Bridges

Narrow wooden paths carved into the rock, lead us to wooden bridges that span the thrashing waters below. We wonder, over the last hundred years since its construction, how many came before us to stand in awe on these bridges

Pools and Rapids

The Gorge was discovered in 1891 by accident by Jakob Žumer, the Major of Gorje, and the cartographer and photographer Benedikt Lergetporer . Radovna river which flows through Vintgar was very low. They were able to make their way through the otherwise impassable ravine. They were so taken with the natural beauty of the area they that they decided to establish a construction committee. The clear waters of the Radovna river with its waterfalls, pools and rapids is breathtakingly beautiful. Each turn offering another vista.

The Vintgar Gorge

We thought the 1600 meter hike around the Gorge is the best part of Bled. Truly spectacular. The shaded forest offered welcome relief from the hot June sun .We followed the wooden pathway that hugged the steep cliffs and took numerous photos of the gorge as it carved its way through the vertical rocks of the Hom and Bort hills . Make sure you have your batteries charged there endless photo opportunites!!

The Gorge was opened for visitors since 1893!!

We debated on hiking to the gorge from the town center but are happy we opted for to take the bus. The bus leaves at 10AM and returns at 12 noon. ONLY ONE A DAY!! 3Euro each way.

Admission to the park is 4Euro

Great hike good for everyone

This is an easy hike along the Radovna River. You walk about 1600 m on a wodden footbridge from 1893 through the gorge. You cross the river many times.
If you like waterfalls and wild nature this is a perfect hike for you.

Walk to Vintgar Gorge

Don't let anyone tell you that you need to take a bus / taxi / organised excursion to Vintgar Gorge - just walk north west from Bled for about 4kms. It's pleasant walk via a small village.

The gorge is spectacular and the colour of the water has to be seen to be believed!
