Church of Santa Maria del Naranco

The Church of Santa Maria del Naranco is a remarkable historical site situated 3 kilometers from Oviedo, Spain. Built in 842, it originally served as part of a royal palace complex commissioned by Ramiro I of Asturias and gained its religious status in 848.

This pre-Romanesque structure features barrel vaulting and stilted arches, marking it as a precursor to Romanesque architecture. The church was recognized as a Monumento Nacional in 1885 and classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural in 1985. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site later that year.
