Day Trip: Figueres Tips (16)

Day Trip: Figueres (Salvador Dali Museum)

There is nothing special to see in Figueres - except the Dali Museum. This unique place is a "must-see" and is worth "sacrificing" an entire day of your stay in Barcelona.

First a little geography. Figueres is about 140 km from Barcelona, towards and near the French border. Along the way is Girona - a town also worth visiting.

By car:
There is really no reason to do this day trip by car, unless you have one already for another reason.
Take the AP-7/E-15 autoroute from Barcelona to Figueres, getting off at Exit 4. Unfortunately, there are no signs to the Dali Museum once you get off the main thoroughfare. Use a good local map (e.g., Google Maps) to get from Exit 4 to Av Salvador Dali, and then go on it for about 2 km until you reach the Museum. You can't miss this unique structure. There is a covered parking lot right next to it - relatively expensive, but very convenient. I paid about 5 euros for 2 hours.

By train:
Take the train from either the main Barcelona station (Sants) or the Passeig de Gracia station. They leave about every hour or two. The trip to Figueres takes about 2 hours. From the train station in Figueres to the Museum it's about 750 meters so it is definitely walkable if the weather is OK.

If you want to do Girona as well on the same day , you must get an early start, as you should allow at least 3-4 hours for the Dali museum. Do the math: 2 hour train ride + half hour to museum + 4 hours at the Museum + half hour back to station + 1 hour to Girona + at least one hour waiting /eating time + 3-4 hours in Girona + 1.5 hours back to Barcelona. If you leave Barcelona at about 6:30-7:00am it can be done. However, I advise doing it in 1.5 days with an overnight in Girona after visiting the Dali Museum. Do your own personal calculations and decide what is best for you.

Salvador Dali museum. I know, I know, there's already SO much to see in Barcelona. But if you've got an extra day, this is definitely a worthwhile trip. It takes a good 4 or 5 hours to see the whole museum, so plan for a whole day. I'd put this museum on the top of my list of Barcelona (in or around) museums.

Check out the website for more information.

Take the train to Figueres to see the Dali Museum

Visit the museum Dali built in Figueres. The building is as impressive as the work it holds.

You can take the train from Barcelona Sants To Girona continuing on to Figueres. It takes 2-2 1/2 hours. A taxi from the station to the museum is not expensive.

Check out my page on Figueres for more pictures and info on the museum

Teatre-Museu Dali

A great 1-day trip from Barcelona to Figueres where the world's best meseum on Dali work is located. The museum is interesting already from the outside and even more from the inside. Dali himself worked on the composition of the museum. I found the experience mind-opening and intriguing.

Daytrip to the Costa Brava region

The Costa Brava region is only about one hour by public transport from Barcelona. Well worth a visit are the towns of Girona (see my Girona page) or Figueres, home of the Salvador Dali Museum.
Last but least the whole Costa Brava coastline with its lovely beaches and rocky bays is worth seeing.

Day trip to the Dali Museum in Figueres

We rented a car (mistake, better to take the train) and drove up to Figueres to visit the Dali Museum. Well worth the effort. There are many of his great works and samples of what was going on in his head.

Figueres- Teatre-Museu Dali

A beautifull place, a little town full of charm... Tourists come and go just to see Dali's museum and forget 2 admire Figueres for itself... Figueres is more than the place where Dali lived his childhood... In the midle of the town is a place named Placa Catalunya where we went in an old bar, with a sign of "english spoken", very picturesque... We have nice memories from Figueres...

Museu Dali, in Figures. It...

Museu Dali, in Figures. It will take you an hour and a half or so by train from Barcelona (Sants Station), but will be worth it. There is something that ventures a beyond playfulness in Dali's work and begins to enter into the realm of magic. If you are a fan, I don't need to tell you to go, you will be drawn here.

Figueres.Museum of Dali.
It's amazing place. The more time you spend there, the more you can appreciate and be open to see the world from Dali perspective.
If I'd put it in some travel category, I'd call it 'Travel with your mind'
