Outdoor Sculpture - Karl XII

Karl XII (r. 1697-1718) was the last of Sweden's great warrior kings. An archrival of Peter the Great, he conquered most of Poland and almost did the same to Russia before his defeat at the battle of Poltava. These and other exploits in the Great Northern War left his country militarily exhausted and seem to have put an end to Sweden's ambitions to become a great power. Nowadays, Karl XII has pigeons sitting on his head in Kungstr?dgarten. Sic transit gloria mundi.

Vanadislunden

A big green park on a hill in central Stockholm next to Vasastan. There is a red brick fortress on top. Great panorama view over the town. In the summer time especially popular for there are lots of lawns and places to sit down for a nice picnic.

I found this park when I saw the fortress from afar and wanted to explore. From Sveavägen, I followed a path up the hill past a derelict looking hotel and the beautiful St. Stefan's Church. The views from the top of the hill were well worth the climb. The fortress wasn't that interesting in the end.

Lida park.

When you had...

Lida park.

When you had enough of the city and want a bit of lovely nature or if you want to go camping.

Don't miss the country music festival which takes place at Lida in August, which is normally quite... interesting.

Take the commuter train towards Södertäje for about 20 minutes, get off at Tullinge and take the bus 721. You need to pre-order the bus back to the trainstation,
call 08-55902700 in order to do this.

More info:
Lida Friluftsgård, tel. 08-778 43 80.

park

We saw this lovely garden right across the road from the Rathuset in the Kingsholmen district, another enjoyable sight we passed as we randomly visited "points of interest" on the map. I don't think it was open to the public but its was still nice to see

Behind the City council building

Behind the City council building, there is a little garden, or "park" with a great view over Stockholm and the waters. It is calm and you can just sit and relax, read a book or something.
