Uppsala University

Uppsala is the oldest university in Scandinavia, founded in 1477. Having said that, it has not been without existential threats throughout history. Starting as a theological faculty with some law and philosophy courses too, it soon stopped when the founding archbishop left. Only 1593, it was decided to seriously attempt opening it again. In the 17th century, the university finally started getting serious financing and courses in the different sciences could start, along with retorics. The university expanded heavily during this time and the 18th century is full of famous Swedish names like Linnaeus and Celsius. Today, we have a university with more than 20000 students who can study most subjects. Uppsala also has a second university in the form of Sweden's Agricultural University.

Runsten

There are around 200 runes around Stockholm area only, so you can imagine the rest of the country! You can really see them everywhere you go... The photo shows one of the nine runes in front of the Uppsala Main University Building, although I've seen a lot of them in the countryside. Most of them date from the 12th century & later, so you can learn a lot about the script, their meaning & function! It's very nice & really fascinating!
