Hinterdorf is the oldest part of Zermatt where you can still find a few of the old wooden houses dating back to the 17th and even 16th century.
Among them are warehouses and storage buildings for sausages, bread and dried meat. An old pig sty can be seen as well.
Most of the wooden houses were built on supporting posts to keep mice and rats away.
The Hinterdorf is situated in the very heart of Zermatt's city centre. The street with all the historic houses is called Hinterdorfstrasse.
