Mount Pilatus Tips (47)

Mt Pilatus tour

It is well worth a visit to the top of Mt Pilatus. The gondola and cable car rides up to the peak give some spectacular views, especially the cable car. Even if the weather is cloudy in Luzern, its possible to have a great view from the peak of the surrounding mountain tops. If you go up with a tour, you have a couple hours at the top, which is more then enough to get a snack and enjoy the view. You may even see some people hang gliding from the slope.

Mt. Pilatus daytrip

I highly recommend taking the excursion to the top of Mt. Pilatus. First taking a paddle-wheel boat then by cog train, you expirience a magnificent view of Lucerne 9,000 ft below and the snowcapped peaks in the distance. A memorable day trip.

Mt Pilatus - Peak

Once you get to the top of the moutain with the cable car, you have a choice of two paths. The climb up the stairs and the wooden railing can be a little nerve wrecking, but the view of the other mountain peaks and down to the city are beautiful.

Mt Pilatus

The skyline of Lucerne is dominated by Mt Pilatus. At an elevation of 2132m, Mt Pilatus is not as high as other Alpine peaks like the Matterhorn of Jungfrau. It is the most easily accessible mountain from Lucerne and you can go up via the funicular railway which ascends at a steep incline of 48% at a certain stretch making it the world's most precipitous funicular railway. Enjoy splendid views of Lucerne from the summit of Mt Pilatus and have a cup of coffee in the cafeteria. To get down from the mountain, take the cable car.

Pilatus

I know it is very expensive to go up to Pilatus. But in my opinion it is worth every Franc. Take both ways (different way up and down) and you will experience two nice trips.

Also plan to spend enough time up there, to make some small hikes. It is beautifull!

amazing mount pilatus

the mount pilatus is the hose-mountain of lucerne and forms a natural skyline above the city which looks very delightful in almost every athmosphere (morning red, bluesky, sundown...) it is seen from everywhere in lucerne and is easy to reach. it is accessible from two sides. one side the summit is served by a aerial cableway, on the other side you ll find the world's steepest cogwheel-railway up to the summit. up there you can do easy waks to different viewpoints or just hang on the terasse of the restraunt there and enjoy to be close to the gods. for those who like to have a special moment in their life, i recomend to stay the night there in the hotel and enjoy the sundown in a veeery romantic surrounding.

Mount Pilatus Observation Deck

the Outside Observation Deck of Pilatus Kulm is the best way to enjoy an uninterrupted 360 view of the scenery around mount Pilatus and the areas beyond it like the swiss alps, lake Lucerne, the hiking and alpine trails and forests and even the other lakes towns like Interlaken (if you have a really powerful optical zoom camera) unless there are hordes of people competing for the space around the open air viewing deck specially in the peak tourist seasons. you can go around the impromptu ice cave beside it and hake a little hike and take pictures as there are sections of the cave which are open and have vista points as well.

Pilatus Kulm is the top of Mount Pilatus and where the common Stations of the Pilatus Cable Car and the Cogwheel Railway converge (although located at separate sides of the complex and is connected via a concrete walkway. Pilatus Kulm also houses a Hotel, several restaurant facilities, souvenir shops, Pilatus mini museum, a carved cave like pathway around the mountain where you can view around, an open viewing deck where you can see 360 degree vies of the swiss alps, lake Lucerne, and beyond. Pilatus Kulm is located 2132 meters (7,000 feet) above sea level.

Central Swiss Alps (Mount Pilatus View)

Off course, Mount Pilatus is a favorite attraction for tourist not only because it is part of the attraction of Lucerne but since the Mountain is the nearest to Lucerne Highest Observation Deck where you can see the magnificent Central Swiss Alps in It's Glory as it is only 15 kilometers away from Lucerne, unlike Stanserhorn which is 24 kilometers away and Rigi which is 22 kilometers away and Mount Titlis in Engelberg which is 36 kilometers away (but it has the best views of the swiss alps as well).

according to Wikipedia:

The Swiss Alps extend over both the Western Alps and the Eastern Alps, encompassing an area sometimes called Central Alps.[1] While the northern ranges from the Bernese Alps to the Appenzell Alps are entirely in Switzerland, the southern ranges from the Mont Blanc massif to the Bernina massif are shared with other countries such as France, Italy, Austria and Liechtenstein.

The Swiss Alps comprise all the mountains of Switzerland over 2,000 metres above sea level and almost all the highest mountains of the Alps, such as Monte Rosa (4,634 m), the Dom (4,545 m), the Lyskamm (4,527 m), the Weisshorn (4,506 m) and the Matterhorn (4,478 m).

Mount Pilatus

this will be my Mount Pilatus Lucerne View

the famed Mount Pilatus, which overlooks the City of Lucerne which legend says either that A Dragon Lives on the Mountain (medieval legend) or that Pontius Pilate who famously washed his hands in the Punishment of Jesus Christ, was buried here. The Mountain actually is composed of several summits of which the highest (2,128 meters or 6982 feet) is named Tomlishorn (on the far side of the observation deck) and Esel Summit (2,119 meters or 6952 feet), where the Cogwheel Railway Station is located. The mountain is part of the Emmanthal Branch of the Swiss Alps and is 15 kilometers away from the Downtown of Lucerne.

There are several ways to go to the mountain such as hiking routes in Kriens area and the Cogwheel Railway in Alpnachstad and the Cable Car in Kriens and the popular route during summer is going to the mountain via the Golden Round Trip, which is composed of using a boat from Lucerne across Lake Lucerne to Alpnachstad, going up on the cogwheel railway, coming down on the aerial cableways and panorama gondolas, and taking a bus back to Lucerne.
