Zürich has a large Old Town which is largely on the right (north) side of the Limmat. If you happen to be staying near the station, it is a nice walk through the Old Town to get to the Opera House.
The street on the first photo is Neumarkt (meaning "New Market"), with the Neumarkt Theater in one of the buildings on the right.
The second photo shows the front of the Neumarkt Theater, and the third photo shows another nearby theater, the Stok, a small and evidently somewhat idiosyncratic theater which was founded in 1970 by a man named Zbigniew Stok.
Compact, beautifully preserved, the Altstadt on the eastern banks of the Limmat is a great place to simply wander, ducking down alleyways, admiring the stunning window displays, grabbing a coffee to people watch, visit a church, gallery or antique shop and have lunch or dinner in one of the many atmospheric cafes or restaurants.
Strolling around Old Town is a true pleasure: most of streets are closed to traffic; there are lots of narrow streets that open up to beautiful small squares. And there are lots of cafes and restaurants.
At night, and since we were there on a weekend, the streets are throbbing with excitement until late in the night.
The quarter between Bahnhofstraße and Limmat river looks small on the map. Nevertheless take your time to explore the narrow lanes round St Peter's church and Lindenhof, and have your camera ready. The Altstadt (old town) is a very picturesque quarter. Many houses date, as inscriptions tell, originally from the middle ages.

The old town is located between Banhoffstrasse and river Limmat. It is full of beautiful medieval alleys, and at the same time is spotless clean and safe. There are many restaurants and shops everywhere.
The Old Town consists of specialty shops, restaurants and bars. We were there at a slow season and many of the shops were closed. We were able to do some book shopping. Our hotel, the Limmatblick was at the entrance to this area and made for easy access to the shopping and train station.
The weather wasn't always perfect during my trip to Zurich but I found that the old town streets - Niederdorferstrasse, Oberdorferstrasse and the Limmatquai were great for window shopping! There was a great jewellrey shop down one street with all different sorts of bags and rings. There were some nice clothes shops on the Limmatquai. The shops close earlier than I expected on Saturdays (around 4pm).
