Hexham Abbey Guided Tour Including Lunch or Afternoon Tea at the Refectory
"Catch a bus or train from Newcastle Central Station (trains leave 22 and 54 minutes past the hour between Monday and Friday) or take the bus 685 from Eldon Square Bus Station (a quarter to the hour Monday-Friday). It is a brief walk from the stat one of the finest monastic survivals in an English church; the Frith Stool a Saxon Bishop's throne which must date from Wilfrid's Church and the beautiful panel paintings including The Dance of Death.Following the absorbing tour of the Abbey you are taken into the recent refurbished visitor centre based in monastic buildings lost to the Abbey during the Reformation but brought back into its ownership in 2012. The Big Story exhibition gives a fascinating overview of the Abbey's history telling the story not only of the buildings but also of the many people who lived worked and praised God here over the centuries. An Anglo Saxon chalice found in a coffin in the 1860s holds pride of place in the main exhibition gallery.
