Gretna Green Things to Do

    Piper

by egonwegh Updated Jun 2, 2016

An authentic Scottish piper. Prior to our visit to Scotland I had made a study of some sorts into the bagpipe and I had learned to name a few of its components e.g. blowpipe, bass drone, chanter and chanter reed. But there was no occasion to make good use of this knowledge. The same is true of my 'study' of the tartan, I really would not be able to tell you what tartan this gentleman is wearing, so any information on the subject would be appreciated. My fascination for the Scottish pipers goes back a long way (more than fifty years actually) because we already saw them when we were kids in my hometown Nijmegen during the 4 Days Marches where they performed in marching bands with soldiers.

    Fun in Gretna Green

by egonwegh Updated Jun 2, 2016

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    J. and I took pictures of each other in these fun photo booths. No doubt they are an invention of the inhabitants of these islands. The 'theme' here is of course eloping and secretely wedding in Gretna Green according to the well-know custom, hence the fierce look of the horseman (that's me) and the damsel in distress in her carriage (that would be Jennie).

    Blacksmiths Shop

Some years ago young couples would elope to Gretna to marry mainly if they were young or were marrying without parents permission. The weddings took place quite legally in the Old Blacksmiths Shop , over an anvil in what was then a quiet Scottish village.
Today weddings are big business in Gretna and people can marry in several places across the town. However this establishment remains the most famous and is now also a large shopping centre, hotel, restaurant, cafes and there is even a specialist whiskey shop. It is generally very good shopping with quality goods and the cafes are also very good.
Everything is free apart from the actual Old Forge building that contains the famous anvil and a small admission charge is made to see the anvil and the museum it is housed in.

Gretna Green's Tartan Shop: Anything and Everything Scottish

    by birchy99 Updated Apr 4, 2011

Well, if you must locate a store in Scotland it would make sense to set it down in the most visited attraction in Scotland, Gretna Green. This place has more Scottish items for sale than Scotland has heather. Clothes, candies, biscuits, statues, wine, haggis, etc...it's all there. One cannot enter this store and come out empty handed.

What to buy: The clothes are really spectacular, fine woolens, tartans, tams, etc. The food selection includes wines, cheeses, crackers, biscuits and of course canned haggis. Souveniers galore. You name it, you can find it.

What to pay: Hard to say. I'd say the clothes are pretty spendy. But the smaller items are reasonably priced.
