    Visit to Kifri

by sachara Updated Apr 19, 2015

Kifri is one of the ancient towns of Iraq and Kurdistan. Abdulla, a local teacher and translator showed us his town and gave a lot of information about the buildings, but also of the old and recent history, interesting and sometimes shocking.

Kifri is an authentic town with a mix of traditional mud houses and newer coloured ones. The inhabitants were friendly, they offered us sweets. They were also curious, not used to foreign visitors.

In Kifri are remains of a kaysari (market), a caravanseray and old houses like the house of the gouvernor. All are in bad shape. A few days after we visited Kifri the Kurdish Prime Minister visited Kifri and promised support.

    Market and caravansaray

by sachara Written Apr 19, 2015

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The remains of a kaysari (market) and a caravanseray are the most historical and interesting of part of Kifri, being one of the ancient towns of Iraq and Kurdistan. They area is in bad shape. With the explanation of Abdulla (his father has a shop here in the former days) and a lot of imagination the remains and walls tell their story.

Some parts of the area look like a dumping part. We even saw some women entering through the gate to dump their waste. Kids were playing between the stones. And of course they were curious and came to watch us and some even for a small talk.
