Al Shandagha Tunnel Tips (2)

Underground Tunnel between Bur Dubai and Deira

The Al Shindagha Tunnel is one of the connecting bridges between Bur Dubai and Deira Districts and is the only underground tunnel among the bridges lining the dubai creek. if you are on a city tour or shopping tour or riding the Dubai Big Bus Tour or the Private Van City Tours, or even riding the RTA Public Buses, you will pass by this 4 lane road with a road clearance height of only 5 meters (18 feet). It is a man-made wonder that goes through Dubai Creek joining the localities of Al Shindagha and Deira. It covers a distance of 1640.42 feet (500meters) and serves as an important link used by around 55,000 vehicles everyday. The tunnel was built in 1975 and is the only underwater tunnel in the country.

Al-Shandagha Tunnel

Crossing the creek from Al Shandagha tunnel has its own charm. It is special because this is underground tunnel under Dubai creek. It is nice experience crossing the tunnel but it becomes very noisy due to special fans installed inside tunnel.

The other two ways to cross creek between Deira and Bur Dubai are either by abra ride or using Rashid Al Maktoum bridge. At late night, abra does not operate and Rashid Al Maktoum bridge is also closed and folded for ships movement on creek. So at that time only option is by using Al Shandagha tunnel.

I always used to feel happy crossing this tunnel because it used to gave me feeling that I am traveling under creek :-)
