Waterton Lakes National Park Things to Do

  • Cameron Falls

This is in the village of Waterton, a short walk from downtown. The falls are not super high but they are still worth a walk to see in my opinion, simply because of the volume of water coming over them.

  • Golfing hidden jewel

A very underrated course, one of the original courses built in National Parks in 1920's. Now under community ownership, being continually upgraded as capital returned to course improvements. Spectacular views of mountains, lake, and Prince of Wales Hotel. Relatively long course, two sets of tees, good carts, and small but good pro shop and...

  • The Bison Paddock

Many people rush right in to Waterton Lakes National Park, and fail to stop at the Bison Paddock which is just inside the park entrance. Waterton is a place where the prairie meets the mountains, and the Paddock is located on the prairie, but with a great mountain view. The Bison Paddock is a large fenced in area with a one way loop road. Visitors...

  • International Peace Park Pavilion

On the south shore of Upper Waterton Lake you will find this Pavilion, between downtown Waterton Park and the town's Marina. There is a small park with a collection of interpretative displays that tell the story of the formation of the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park. As a history buff I found it very interesting. By taking the time to...

The Glacier National Park in Montana, U.S.A., actually joins Waterton National Park in Alberta, Canada. We went for the drive to Glacier, so we could drive the "Going to the Sun" scenic road journey.Lucky we remembered our Passports, as we had to go through a border crossing. On the way, there were nice scenic views, this meant a few stops for...

Waterton Village, and I couldn't believe my eyes!.......there were Deer roaming the streets, infact, Deer were everywhere, in people's front yards, on the roads, and some had Fawn's too! Waterton Village is only very tiny, offering everything you could need, such as activities, lodging, dining and other services. The Village is scenically located,...

Waterton Lakes National Park Restaurants

Alberta food service inspection should shut this place down!On a day trip to Waterton with my son, daughter in law and 3 month old granddaughter, my husband and I thought it would be nice to treat everyone to dinner while in Waterton....after some discussion we decided to eat at ZUM'S Eatery and Mercantile.....Worst decision we have ever...

  • Good food

Frank's serves really great Chinese food. The decor is typical plain-jane cafe style, but what it lacks in atmosphere it more than makes up for in taste! They serve Chinese and American dishes and a good breakfast. This is one of the cheapest places to eat in the park.Unfortunately, Frank's is no more..... :( We go here for breakfast a lot when in...

  • Breakfast Buffet at Waterton Lakes...

We went over to eat the buffet breakfast at Waterton Lakes Lodge because it was recommended to us at Crandall Mountain Lodge. They offered a Senior price of $10.50. We were there about 8 AM and a tour group was just finishing up, so we were asked to come back in a half an hour. Coffee was included in the buffet and we were seated by the...

Waterton Lakes National Park Nightlife

  • Movie Night!

This movie theatre is located in the historic opera house. It is in the downtown core, and shows recently released movies. It is only open in the summer months. This is the perfect place to spend a rainy evening in the park!

  • The only night life in town!

This saloon is located in the Bayshore Inn. It is a fairly large bar and gets pretty busy in the evenings. It is only open during the summer season. There are pool tables, a DJ and a dance floor. Waterton is a pretty casual place, and so is the dress code for the Thirsty Bear.

  • A whirlwind night

I went a few years ago to this bar, and it was crazy in there! Loud, dancing, people everywhere - so much fun! Be warned though, when that many cowboys get together, they are bound to try to fight someone, even if its each other! No dress code

Waterton Lakes National Park Transportation

  • A Rental Car is Essential

About 3 months prior to our trip, I checked with the major car rental companies to see what I could get for a deal. In the course of my discussions with them, it suddenly occured to me that maybe I should see if they offer any discounts for 'seniors', now that I am over 55! This proved to be a good idea when it came to National Car Rental - they...

  • Quaint Ice Cream Shop...

This is such a cute little store. It is filled with posters and scrolls and all sorts of things to make it seem out of a different century. They had real blue bubblegum ice cream, along with any kind of shake or sundae you wanted. Free whipped cream and a cherry on every purchase!

  • CANDY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This was one of my favorite shops, and if you've met you, you'll understand. I love candy, especially hard candy, and this store has it all! From ice cream (not blue bubble gum though), to homemade taffy, to hundreds of different pez's, whatever your sweet tooth desires, you can find it here!

    Feeding the animals

by jojocan Written Feb 5, 2005

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Like in all National Parks, you are not supposed to feed the wildlife! In Waterton, that rule is ignored regularly by tourists. It makes it dangerous to walk downtown sometimes. In one soccer field, there were several deer, and tourists were trying to get close to them. This is very unsafe people! Children have been attacked by mama deer proctecting their babies. Don't do it!

Waterton Lakes National Park Warnings and Dangers

  • Wild animals are still dangerous!

Always be aware of the wildlife around you. Yes, the deer, elk, sheep, goats and cougars wander right into town, but they are still wild animals, especially in rutting season, or when they have babies with them. As well, when you are off hiking in the trees, keep your dogs on leashes, even when you are alone - cougars like easy pickin's, and a dog...

  • Stay away from Bears

You will probably encounter a bear while visiting this National Park. We saw two in only two days!Never leave your vehicle or approach the bear in order to get a better photo. They may look cute and cuddly, but they can be very dangerous. Invest in a zoom lens if you must have that perfect shot. When hiking it is recommended to make alot of noise,...

  • Bears!

There is a healthy grizzly and black bear population in Waterton Lakes National Park. Travelling in a group is recommended. Bear mace (last resort defence) and bear-bells (for noise) are available from some shops. I've also heard of bear-bangers, which might be compared to a military "thunderclap", a noise-maker which can shake the whole valley to...

Waterton Lakes National Park What to Pack

  • Depending on when you go...

Depending on the season you go to Waterton, know that because its in the mountains, the snow takes a little longer to melt, and its a little chillier, especially at nights. Bring clothes you can layer, and that are windproof. The winds in Waterton are anywhere from 60km / hr to 100km / hr, on average!

  • Be prepared and comfortable.

Waterton Lakes National Park can be very warm during the day and freezing at night. A warm jacket, gloves and weather proof shoes are a must. Pack light, everything is readily available I always travel with my Minolta SLR camera with 2 lenses (1x 35/80 and 1x 75/300 zoom), a two times converter, a polariser for both lenses, a spare battery and...

Waterton Lakes National Park Off The Beaten Path

  • Twin Butte General Store

This little store is located about 25 km north of Waterton Park, on highway #6 (about midway between Waterton and Pincher Creek), in the little town of Twin Butte. In addition to being a general store that sells sundries, camping supplies, souvenirs & ice cream, they also have a liquor store, post office and a lounge/restaurant. They have live music...

  • Carthew summit

Most park visitors never see the true wilderness that the Glacier-Waterton International Peace Park was created to preserve. To experience the raw beauty of the park I suggest at least a few summits. The Carthew summit is the one of the easiest I attempted that summer and would be a good starting point for a first summit experience. It is very...

This runs from May through September each year.Prices are: Adults $19.50, Youth $16.00 and children under 9 are...

Waterton Lakes National Park Sports & Outdoors

  • Crypt Lake Trail

My travelling colleague attempted to do the Crypt Lake Trail. We caught the boat taxi and went across Upper Waterton Lake to start the trail. It was tough - a very steep ascent throughout, over 1000m above sea level...we had reached 3/4 way up and we both decided to turn back and descend. We saw high waterfalls including 600 ft Crypt Falls and had...

  • A Paradise for Hikers

Waterton Lakes National Park boasts 255 kilometers (191 miles) of trails - long and short - easy and difficult. One of those trails, to Crypt Lake, has been named the best hike in all of Canada. We didn't take that one because of time constraints, however, Karen and I did hike a total of about 9 miles of trails in the park and lamented the fact...

Waterton Lakes National Park General

We were at Waterton National Park in June and the Wildflowers were in bloom. I saw quite a few different ones, how nice in this pretty setting.Waterton Lakes National Park is home to more than 50 per cent of Alberta's wildflowers... more than any other Rocky Mountain national park. Over 50 of Canada's rare flowers grow in Waterton, 30 of which are...

  • Laundry & Showers

The Waterton Health Club (in the Waterton Lakes Lodge) has public showers and laundry available to non-members. This is perfect for someone who's been hiking or back country camping for a few days and is desperate for a hot shower! The cost for showers last time I checked was $3 CAD. For a mere $6 a day, you can use the whole facility - gym, pool,...

  • A Beautiful Little Town

Waterton Park townsite gained its first permanent residents in 1904 when the Western Coal and Oil Company established a cookhouse, bunkhouse, blacksmith shop, office, stable and engine room for its operations in the area (oil had been struck two years earlier in the nearby Cameron Creek valley). Because of the formation of the original 'Kootenay...
