The Falls look amazing from the various vantage points. There is nothing unique about seeing them from another viewing spot- from behind the falls... You see that there is a lot of water flowing through the falls-nothing new here unfortunately....Not worth spending on...
You absolutely must go to Niagara Falls to see the falls, but don't spend anytime in the town itself, it is pretty tacky (it's not called the Honeymoon capital of the world for nothing) and there is not much to amuse you apart form over-priced shops!!!!!. The nearby Niagara-On-The-Lake is very pretty and is a much better bet.
Unique Suggestions Spend all of your time gazing at the falls.
Fun Alternatives Head to Niagara-On-The-Lake
Niagara Falls gets a second mention on my Toronto page. Everything that is natural ie the water, the rocks, the overall scenery is brilliant. The hotels and gift shops and the inevitable tourist attractions tended to spoil it for me. There was just too much. Too many hotels and an awful lot of building work.
This is a view of the American falls, the Canadian ones are so much more majestic, but I don't have a pic. This is the ULTIMATE tourist trap in Canada. When I was there 2 years ago, I couldn't believe the amount of people and tourists there!!!
The Maid of the Mist boats are a piece of history in themselves. The Maid of the Mist I was launched in the 1840's and used to ferry people accross the border. Once the International Bridge was built, it became purely a sight-seeing vehicle.
You can take a boat ride to the base of the falls on the Maid of the Mist. The service runs from April through to October. It costs $12.00 Canadian and lasts about 20 minutes. Despite its extremely touristy nature - I loved it and it's something that should not be missed! At the base of these falls, you really get a feel of the power of this natural wonder! It makes you feel very small!!
