Funiculaire du Vieux Quebec Tips (9)

Ride the funicular!

If you can't bare the thought of climbing all the way up to the Dufferin Terrace after a nice stroll down in the Petit Champlain area, why not ride up on the funicular? Quebec's funicular, the only one of its kind in Canada, has been in operation for over 125 years, offering a quick and cheap ride as well as a breath-taking panoramic view of the St. Lawrence River. Tickets only cost $1.50!

As a side note, in the Petit-Champlain area, the funicular departs from the house that once belonged to Louis Jolliet, the man who discovered the Mississippi River. And as another side note, yes, there was an accident at the funicular about a decade ago but nothing to worry about, they've completely rebuilt it using modern technology and all the latest safety features. So have a great and fun ride, don't forget to bring your camera!

Save Your Legs & Heart - Ride The Funicular

When you have been touring the river side streets of the Old Town do not consider walking the steep staircase up the cliff face to Chateau Frontenac for that refreshing beer or coffee. It is a very tough climb amd you would be better to walk down the steps and then pay the $1.75 to ride the funicular rail to the top and enjoy the view.

Everytime I come across one of these, it's a must to get within. Much like a diagonal elevator, this will bring one up in elevation up the cliffside from the lower Basseville to the upper walled city dead center in front of the Fronterac. Great way to get to the terrasse duffrein if you are one of the many staircase complainers.

Funicular is Amazing!

The funicular is definitely one of my all time favorite things to do in Quebec. My family goes every time we are in Quebec and I never get bored of it. Check it out here:

The lower station of the Funiculaire is located inside Louis-Jolliet House. The house was built in 1683 by architect Baillif for Louis-Jolliet, discoverer of the Mississipi, who lived here until his death in 1700.

In 1945 a fire destroyed the residence. Owner, Sir Robert P. Kernon rebuilt the heritage house according to the original architectural design. In l946 the Funiculaire re-opened during a ceremony honouring Jolliets 300th Birthday.

The Funiclaire

An inclined plane that connects the upper part of the Old City and the lower part of the Old City. It is located adjacent to Le Chateau Frontenac. It costs $3.00 round trip. But it is worth it.

Funiculaire (sort of like an outdoor elevator)
The funniculaire is the easiest way to get from Old Lower Town to Old Upper Town. You could take the equivalent of about 7 flights of stairs instead.

Funiculaire and Old Streets

I recommend that you walk down to the old port area and take the funiculaire back up. It's a long up walk.

Reasonable price - nice view

A ride up the funicular was about $2.50 last October. Once up there we enjoyed the view and many other lovely streets and shops.
