Cuernavaca Cathedral: Historical Gem of Faith

Considered one of the oldest churches in the Americas, Cuernavaca Cathedral reflects a rich history. Built in 1526 by indigenous craftsmen, it served as an early Christian mission by the Franciscans.

The cathedral, known as Templo de la Asunción de María, exhibits a plain yet solid facade, complemented by a unique blend of indigenous and European architectural features. Frescoes from the 17th century showcase the martyrdom of missionaries in Japan, painted by a Japanese convert. The cathedral compound contains smaller churches, including the Templo de la Tercera Orden de San Francisco, which features ornate baroque decorations.
