Bazaar del Mundo Tips (3)

The Patio at Fiesta de Reyes

I know this isn't the "Restaurant Tips" Section, I just wanted to show you the best place to be sitting when the free performances begin.

We'll have a great view of the stage from Casa De Pico's patio. Let's sit at a table near the wall and order a Margarita!

Update:

The free performances I spoke of will be no more, after May 2005. I don't know exactly what will be in this area to recommend it to you, but when I know I'll say.

Update:

The performances have returned as have the colorful décor. It is now called Fiesta de Reyes which has taken over and the restaurant is now named, "Casa de Reyes." The patio is still there and the food is pretty good. The main thing is that you can enjoy a meal and a Margarita while watching the show.

Bazaar Del Mundo Carriage Entrance

This is the entrance to Bazar del Mundo, (Bazaar of the World.) In this section of Old Town you will find a "newer" addition, constructed in the late 1960's and created to boost interest in Old Town. It is a colorful place, with shops selling all kinds of things from around the world, thus the name.

In the Bazar del Mundo courtyard there is a stage where dancers and singers perform for all to see, at no charge.

One might call this a "tourist trap" but I don't. First, my favorite Old Town restaruant is located in the courtyard. Second, there are some pretty unique things to see that are well worth the asking price. Last but not least, free entertainment.

All year round flowers grow in the gardens making this a pleasant place to spend time. Especially in the winter it is very cheerful.

Update:

May 2005 will usher in the end of Bazaar del Mundo as we know it. An out of state company has won the bid for this area of Old Town San Diego Historical Park and it seems that all the lovely flowers will be pulled out, the authentic restaurants will give way to something else, the uniquely colorful shops will be closed and the proposed changes may throw this great park area back to the popularity level it held before the 1960's.

Let's hope that the new look of this area will be as good for the park as Bazaar del Mundo was. It will now be called PLaza del Pasado. The design plan is to represent three distinct periods of San Diego's past, Mexican, Transitional and American histories.

To get an idea of the new plans, check out the website below.

Update

Well, it seems that the "up north" owners didn't do well here and stepped aside to newer owners. In the spring of 2009, Chuck Ross and the "Old Town Family Hospitality Corporation" that had taken over the management of this section. I was pleasantly surprised to see some of the old festive flavor restored. It is now called, "Fiesta de Reyes," which means, Festival of the Kings. I ate at the restaurant that was once my favorite, Casa de Pico, and the food was pretty good so I can now recommend it.

Also, I should mention that the Bazzar del Mundo has moved to a near-by location so you can see it while in Old Town.

What a Lovey Way to Spend an Afternoon!

Perfect timing! The show begins.

What could be a better Must See than this?

A sunny day, great food, yummy drink, energetic music and a friend to share it with!

These performances are offered several times a day in the summer and on weekends in winter.

Update:

So much for this tip too. The bad news is that the original Bazaar del Mundo will be closing it's doors between 9 and 31 May 2005. Plaza del Pasado will replace Bazaar del Mundo and there is a plan to offer cultural music, cuentista storytellers and folkloric dancers.

Update:

The good news, Fiesta de Reyes has resumed the entertainment so you will have the chance of seeing the show while here too.

You can see the stage from the patio of the restaurant or just sit on the lawn and relax. Still no charge.
