Pismo State Beach, Pismo Beach
This is a beautiful beach with towering sand dunes that are very popular with off-roaders. It's also the only beach in the state where you can drive vehicles on the beach. You can enjoy all matters of water activities here as well as riding horses on the beach!
Directions: The beach is located in the town of Oceano off Highway 1, several miles south of downtown Pismo Beach on highway 1.
Pismo has one of the best Beach scenes on the Central Coast, very wide, very convienient to their little walking downtown. Showers right off the beach. Very nice. Kite flying on the beach is also very popular here. Great for sunset strolls.
Pismo State Beach offers a wide range of activities from swimming, surfing, sunbathing, fishing, bird watching, or hiking on its trails. Pismo is also the only beach in California where the sand is firm enough to drive vehicles on the beach. The park contains both areas of beach where cars are allowed, and areas where they are not. Found an ATV company out of the brochures in the motel and rented a couple of ATVs for two hours. After about five minutes of instruction, we got on our ATVs and we set off. We were on the beach and I kinda thought that was it. After a few mins of getting aquainted with the ATV, I turned the corner and I saw the main part of the course. It was huge!!! Some of the dunes features 50 to 60 foot drops!! I thinkk everyone in my group got thrown off or fell off the ATV at least once. Heck my friend almost had his ATV roll over on him. It wasn't uncommon to hear sirens of ambulances but luckily no one in my group was injured. Be careful if do go, you can get seriously hurt if you go to fast and go over a steep decline which as I mentioned, can be up to 50 feet high. And there are other riders on dirtbikes so watch out for them.
