Pikes Peak Historical Society Museum -...

by Basaic Written Dec 1, 2015

Many people just drive through Florissant while en route to other places along U.S. Highway 24 or to the Florissant Fossil Beds and do not bother to stop here. That is too bad because they miss out on a fine small town museum. this museum has very interesting geological displays like some huge quartz crystal (photo 4) displays on the history of the town and the area to include some of the settlers, and a number of other historical displays and photos. It is well worth stopping and looking through these displays. Hours are 10 AM to 4 PM, usually on the weekends between April and October. Other times by appointment. Admission is FREE.

    Florissant

by Basaic Written Dec 1, 2015

Florissant is a tiny town of about 100 located at the intersection of U.S. Highway 24 and Teller County Highway 1 in Teller County in Central Colorado. Florissant was established in 1870 by a group of settlers that included Judge James Costello who named the town after his hometown of Florissant, Missouri. The largest fire in Colorado history, the Hayman Fire, started near here in 2006. The town is also the gateway to the Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument. There are three individual sites in Florissant listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
