    Frozen Dead Guy Days

by DSwede Updated Feb 29, 2012

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

What can I say, check out the annual festival in honor of the local Frozen Dead Guy if you really like things that are a bit off from what is considered main stream.

Here's a snip from the Chamber of Commerce page (link below):
"Bredo Morstoel, or as he is known around here, Grandpa in the Tuff Shed, was born in Norway in 1900. He stopped breathing in 1989, but is currently awaiting re-animation at some undetermined time in the future. This is the Life Extension Concept: Grandpa is not truly dead, he?s just waiting until they can fix him and bring him back to life. The concept of cryogenics has been around for a few years."

  • Wild Mountain Brewery and Smokehouse

Right in the heart of historic downtown Nederland, is a 2-story brewery and smokehouse known as the Wild Mountain. While Pork and Beef are their specialty, they have many vegetarian options. Unfortunately I'm not a beer drinker as I hear they have some great hand-crafted brews available on the menu such as their signature Otis Pale Ale, Hop Diggity...

  • Good food --- great prices!

The restaurant was very close to the major intersection in the town ... right across from the visitor's center. It had both inside and outside eating areas. We chose the inside area. It was small (but with character) and had fast, friendly service. I ordered a calzone which was very tasty and very large. It should satisfy even a very hearty...

Nederland Nightlife

  • My favorite bar in America

Okay, so it's been around forever and it's not a high end bar in the least. But it's still my favorite bar in America. Sit at the bar on a cold, snowy, winters night, and you'll make friends with all the local mountain men in a heartbeat! no dress code

  • The Pioneer Inn, The...

The Pioneer Inn, The Wolftongue Brewery, The Sundance Cafe and The Acoustic Coffehouse all have live music on alternating nights. Acid Jazz, Bluegrass, Folk, and good old Rock all get their turn here. The difference between say a bar in Ned as opposed to a bar down in Boulder is the people. Up here people are just plain different. They choose to...

A health food store in the middle of a healthy place--what could make more sense?

What to buy: Organic fruits, vegetables, juices, and great bakery items too.

What to pay: average price of organic food---not cheap.

  • the altitude

Nederland has a really high elevation, and some people have a problem adjusting to the altitude. If you start feeling lightheaded and dizzy, you may want to descend to Boulder untill your body adjusts.

Beware the wind! It can get pretty nasty up here and gusts of 80mph aren't that uncommon. No crime. You have a greater chance of being nuzzled by a large dog than a crime being commited against you. And the the mountains here it is very unpredictabe. It can go from sunny upper 70's (F) to snowy low 30's (F) within a half hour so be...

Nederland Off The Beaten Path

  • Caribou Ranch

This ranch used to be a recording studio. People like Elton John, Chicago, and Billy Joel recorded there--to name a few. It's also a working cattle ranch with water fall on the property and an original ghost town. It's a beautiful place with a lot of history.

  • Take a drive out of town to...

Take a drive out of town to the tiny town of Eldora and go for a hike to the ghost town of Hessie. Drive to Caribou and see the old mining ruins. Do some fishing at Barker Resevoir-you can't miss it, it's the huge body of water that dominates Nederland.

If your current health insurance doesn't cover you while your abroad, you should consider getting international travel insurance just in case something should go wrong.

You must first remember this is Nederland Colorado USA. It is not in Europe. Nederland is a funky, tiny little town in the mountians west of Boulder. It is very small.
