Norwalk Things to Do

  • Stepping Stones Museum for Children

Even though we live about an hour away, I'd never heard of this children's museum until we started asking around for staycation ideas. Located not far from the Maritime Aquarium, Stepping Stones is an excellent stop for families with preschool and younger elementary children.Hands-on exhibits include a waterscape area, where kids learn about water...

  • Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum

I am a mansion buff and love to check them out whenever I get the chance. Unfortunately the mansion was closed when we got there. We were able to walk around the grounds and snap some pictures of the exterior of the mansion, which is impressive in itself. The gift shop was still open, or so I thought due to the door being wide open. It was actually...

  • The Maritime Aquarium

As usual, I have ants in my pants and just can't seem to sit still, so yesterday I gathered up the boys and headed out to Connecticut to see the Maritime Aquarium. This is a really cute aquarium, perfect for younger kids and kids who have never seen an aquarium before. There are a variety of exhibits including seals, meerkats, lorikeets, turtles,...

  • Oyster festival

The Norwalk oyster fest is a blast. You can enjoy dozens of live acts of all genres. My pick for best band this year- "Yankee Zulu"This club is across the street from the site and is the best place to park your sled. Just talk to the doorman.

  • Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk

We first went to the Maritime Aquarium in the late 90s, pre-kids - I most remember the seal tank area near the entrance and not much else (did we even take pictures?)The Aquarium has since renovated and expanded, although the seals are still there. There's a touch tank, jellyfish, a regional fish exhibit, meerkats (what that has to do with the...

  • SONO Arts Festival

This year it seemed little more than a simple street fair with find it everywhere items. Not sure if its degraded that badly or if it was the extreme heat that made it feel as such.Overall I was disappointed.

Norwalk Restaurants

  • A Chocolate Lovers Dream

While walking around Norwalk, the boys and I came across Chocopologie. Of course we had to check it out, just because it had the word chocolate in it. We were not disappointed that we stopped in for a snack. We shared a fondue pot which was so yummy. It came with chunks of bananas, sliced strawberries and pieces of chocolate cake for dipping. The...

  • Fresh and tasty seafood and land choices

We enjoy coming to this restaurant, especially during the off season when we don't have to wait too long for a table. The restuarant is located at the end of a dock with views of the river. It's a bit on the small size with the bar to the right and the dining area to the left, there is also an outdoor patio where you can enjoy a nice meal during...

  • Good place to grab some food

This is a restaurant that has a really nice size bar which is located to the left as you enter the place. There are plenty of booths and tables where you can enjoy good food as well as some decent drinks. The menu is nice and diverse. The appetizer menu has a nice selection of fish/seafood bites and there is a nice salad selection as well as the...

  • Tasty Indian Food

Coromandel is a chain of Indian restaurants with locations all over Connecticut as well as in New Rochelle, New York. This particular location is located right on Washington Street in the heart of the SoNo section of Norwalk. My wife and I have frequented the location in Orange Connecticut and thought we'd give this one a try since we are frequently...

  • Hot Dogs of course :)

We first heard of Swanky Frank's in a book titled "Drive I-95 Exit by Exit" which has some really great off the beaten places to stay, eat and visit. Swanky Frank's is a small road side "diner-style" place to grab a quick bite which happens to specialize in yummy hot dogs. As soon as you enter the location there is a large bar-like counter where...

  • Delicious Tapas

Barcelona is actually a chain of restuarant sin Connecticut with locations in Sono, Greenwich, Stamford, Fairfield, Hartford and New Haven. Liz and I usualy frequent the Greenwich location (it's closer to home) but enjoy the outside seating at the Sono location in the summer months as well as the more laid back vibe. Our last visit to Barcelona was...

  • More than Just Chocolate.......

Chocopologie is one of the reasons I agree to come to Norwalk...the food is that good. Chocopologie is a small restaurant/chocolate store created by the famous master chocolatier Fritz Knipschildt. The location is tiny but the dining room is warm and cozy with tiny tables and booths. The decor is dimly lit with candles throughout for a romantic and...

  • Nice Pub in a Dead Town

The Black Bear is a bar/resturant with various locations in CT and in White Plains. The Black Bear is our old standby when we are in SoNo and want a snack. The bar/restaurant is a nice size with plenty of dining room seating as well as room at the bar. They serve the typical pub grub fare which is actually pretty good and ranges from nachos,...

  • Black Bear Saloon

Located in SONO on Washington Street is this pub/restaurant. It's a staple on every single one of our visits. No matter what time of day you arrive in Norwalk, you'll find this place open with a few patrons enjoying a few drinks and something to eat. The booths (see pic) each have their own tv screen which is a nice touch. Throughout the bar there...

Norwalk Nightlife

  • They even make some really good mojitos!

Black Bear is always one of our "watering hole" stops every time we visit Norwalk. It's a great place to grab a few drinks and if you're hungry, some really yummy stuff as well. They have two sections with bars on both ends, but we normally stay at the smaller area where we find a spot at the bar enjoying a few drinks, a game and some good...

  • Grab a drink and watch a game

We've been to this bar/restaurant quite a few times during our many visits to Norwalk. Nice thing is if you are here during the warmer months you can enjoy your drink or meal at one of their outdoor seating. Ferni and I have usually tend to visit during the colder months when we can grab a seat indoors near the the fireplace. We like that they do...

  • Large selection of beers, including my...

We enjoying coming to this place. They carry a very large selection of beers, well drinks, hard liquor as well as specialty drinks not usually found in most bars. I love the fact that they sometimes carry my Leffe Blonde or some variation of a blonde ale. The restaurant/bar is a nice size with the bar located to the left of the entrance. There are...

  • Grabbing a bite to eat and a drink

During one of our late afternoon drives, we decided to stop in at B J Ryans for a drink and a light bite to eat. The bar is strategically located on a corner near many of the car dealers in the area as well as behind a parking area and park. The bar isn't large by any means, but quite nice. As you enter the bar is on the right as well as a few bar...

  • Relaxed Pub Atmosphere

Rivals is a Sportsbar/restaurant in the SoNo section of Norwalk's Main Street. The place is rather large with a big bar area and a dining area for table seating. The menu has a variety of bottled and tap beers. Their food items are typical pub grub such as burgers, buffalo wings nachos, steak sandwiches and potato skins. They are known for their...

  • Nice Bar at the Doubletree

Saffire Lounge is the pub located in the Doubletree Hotel. Every time Ferni and I have stayed at the hotel we have made it a point to stop in to grab a drink before heading up to our room. The lounge is quite nice with a very nice bar with a few tvs for sports watching. They serve food here too, but we've only stopped in for a few beers. I usually...

Norwalk Transportation

  • Driving

The few times we have visited Norwalk has been by car. Getting to Norwalk from our home is easy and convient and just an hour drive north on I-95. Driving gives us the freedom to arrive at any time, stay as long as we like and leave at our leisure.

  • Metro North

Norwalk is easily accessible from NYC (via Grand Central Terminal) or other stops along the New Haven Line and if you decide to travel on MetroNorth the station stop I would recommend to disembark on is the South Norwalk Station. The ride from NYC is about 45 minutes. Prices vary on time (peak or off peak) and whether you purchase ticket on board...

  • MTA

If you haven't got a motorcycle the best way to go might be the train. Norwalk is a stop on the New Haven line. Parking is at a premium during Oyster fest, other times it is not a problem. If you are going to the oyster fest or the aquarium, then take the south Norwalk station stop. Check the website to apply for a bicycle pass to bring your bike...

Norwalk Shopping

  • Stew Leonard's

My wife and I always stop at this shop when we are here for groceries. Since Stew Leonards is just across the street it is only logical to make the pit stop in to pick up a few bottles of our favorites. The store has a nice selection of wines and hard liquors. The sections are broken down by country then region and finally variety. This makes it...

  • Sweet Treats for the Kids and Adults

Liz was drawn into this shop by the Giant Gum Ball machine in the front window. One side of the shop has loose candy for sale by weight. The other side of the shop has stuffed animals, children's clothes, toys, accesories and even ice cream. Anything your sweet toth desires. Liz bought some strawberry sour candy strings and I bought some swizzle...

  • Municiple Parking Lots

In Norwalk there are several Municipal Parking lots to park your car. It's relatively easy to find a parking space and the lots are spread out throughout the town. We prefer the Webster Parking Lot because of it's close proximity to restaurants, shops and the movies. Park your car; note the space and pre pay at one of the machines for your duration...

  • Easy to Follow Signs

As soon as you get off the highway there are numerous easy to read signs that point what direction certain Norwalk attractions are located. The signs clearly point to SoNo, the martime Aquarium and other points of interest around the town.

  • Paying for Parking

Norwalk is a tough town to find parking you don't have to pay for. Most on the street parking is metered. There are municipal lots in town that charge a fee to park. We prefer ro park at the Maritime Aquarium Parking and then walk around town.

  • Parking in South Norwalk

If you drive to Norwalk, like we did, you'll want to park your car and walk around the compact part of SONO. There are a few public parking areas and this particular location was located on North Water Street, conveniently located near Washington Street. You find a spot to park your car and pay the amount for the desired time at a vending booth....
