    Atlantic Beach-Neptune Beach Town Center

    by HSC123 Updated May 28, 2016

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Beginning at the Atlantic Blvd. beach access and spanning a few square blocks to the north, west, and south, Beach Town Center is the epicenter of activity for both Atlantic and Neptune Beaches. Here, a host of funky, trendy, family friendly, upscale, and casual dining hotspots are located just footsteps from the sand. Restaurants like North Beach Fish Camp, Poe's Tavern, Ragtime, Al’s Pizza, Mezza Luna, Ocean 60, Flying Iguana, Joseph’s, and Sliders, along with other smaller coffee and dessert shops, draw patrons from Jacksonville and beyond to enjoy a meal or treat in a very idyllic, friendly atmosphere. At Beach Town Center it is common to see swimsuit-clad bicyclists and sandy-footed just-off-the-beach pedestrians mingled with well-groomed preppies, couples on a romantic date, and families with small children in tow. At Christmas time, Beach Town Center also becomes a wonderland of lights as the blocks of palm trees lining key streets get wrapped with multicolored lights.

While Jacksonville's Beaches are perhaps not as acclaimed for their waves as hot spots like Sebastian Inlet and New Smyrna Beach, they are home to sponsored professionals who compete in international tournaments. On any given day, a trip to the beach may make you a spectator of some local surfing action, ocean kayaking, windsurfing, paddleboarding, skimboarding, or even--when the wind is right--kiteboarding. The pier in Jacksonville Beach and "The Poles" which separate Hanna Park from the restricted area of N.A.S. Mayport known for having some of the best local wave breaks.

This "beachy" eatery in Atlantic Beach is one of my favorite breakfast spots. Cozy and comfortable this relatively small diner is a popular locals' hangout. Open until 2 p.m., their menu includes a wide variety of breakfast combinations as well as sandwiches and salads. Inside, white walls with light yellow accents and soft watercolor artwork depicting various beach scenes exude an atmosphere of warmth, friendliness and relaxation.

Consistently voted best pizza in Jax by readers of various local publications, Al's Pizza is a Jacksonville area favorite. Each of the local chain's six locations has a unique, somewhat funky, somewhat trendy decor that gives it an ambience worthy of the pizzas, calzones and other favorites they create. The one in Atlantic Beach is the original. It has an eclectic yet casual feel that is just right for grabbing a bite after a day on the beach.
