    Kailua-Kona Things to Do

The Big Island isn't the best island for pristine beaches but the snorkeling is great and I snorkeled every day I was there and very much intend to return and do the same. The best snorkeling spots are rocky and tricky to get into and out of the water but it's worth it for the wonders you see. Beach shoes are a must at least for my tender feet .....

Bubba Gump Shrimp Factory is a kitchsy chain of shrimp restaurants based on the movie Forrest Gump. While I generally think theme restaurants are lame, I've been surprisingly happy with Bubba Gump when I've eaten there. Mind you, this isn't 5 star fare, but tasty, basic southern inspired shrimp, seafood, ribs, etc. One of their best qualities is...

I had previously visited Rainbow Falls during a trip to the Big Island many years ago. In 2013, my wife and I visited Hilo and took a local tour which brought us to Rainbow Falls. Not worth stopping at

by DMcD Written Aug 16, 2006

It has been a few years since I was here visiting my parents but I doubt much has changed. The only commercial business is Hirano's market (on the highway on the way to the Volcano House). There is no town to speak of and the area consists primarily of numerous 3 acre rural lots (worth very little money and hard to sell once you're on the hook) with a few houses here and there. The dirt roads are terribly maintained and watch out for hiking around because they don't call this Fern Forest for nothing -- the area is heavily overgrown with inpenetrable Buckhorn ferns (take a machete). Also watch out for getting shot by "Pocololo"(marijuana) farmers guarding their harvest.

Hawaii (Big Island)

Known for its 8 pristine islands and for being a staple destination among tropical resorts, a Hawaii vacation is something everyone ought to pamper themselves with at some point. You can visit the Lolani Palace in Honolulu, marvel at the active Kilauea Volcano on the Big Island, take a helicopter tour over Kauai, relax on a whale-watching catamaran cruise, snorkel off the island of Molokini, and shop in Waikiki. So pick from one of the many beautiful Hawaii hotels, unpack your bags, and enjoy!
