Longs Drugstore: Kona coffee and macadamia nuts, for less

by kellinwood Updated Aug 10, 2011

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Yes, its a general merchandise drugstore, but they also carry quite a few local products such as Kona coffee, macadamia nuts, Hawaiian Sun fruit drinks, jams and jellies, and the full line of "Island Cravings" snacks. The prices for these items are usually the lowest around. And since Kailua is a beach town, you'll want to stock up on beach chairs, flip-flop sandals (or "slippers" as they are called here), and sunscreen.

The store is popular with the locals, especially when there is a sale which seems to be quite often.

You might have trouble finding a parking spot on Thursday evenings which is when the Farmer's Market is held (5pm - 7:30pm). The market uses part of the lower level of the Longs parking structure, but you can usually find parking on the upper levels.

What to buy: Hawaiian Isles "Kona Sunrise" coffee (10% Kona blend).

Address: 609 Kailua Road, Kialua HI, 96734

Directions: Next to Macy's on Kailua Rd.

Kailua Farmer's Market: Local food and produce

by kellinwood Updated Jul 20, 2011

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The farmer's market is held every Thursday in the lower level of the parking structure behind Longs Drugstore between 5 and 7:30pm. The best place to park is in the upper levels of the parking structure -- its free.

At this market you can find fruits, vegetables and other kinds of locally grown produce. The various vendors also offer local fish, coffee, bread, flowers, and even chocolate.

Its also a great place to pick up dinner. You can find a variety of freshly prepared food for sale such as Hawaiian plate lunch, Greek, Indian, Mexican, etc. My wife and I enjoyed a freshly cooked corn on the cob covered with parmesan cheese ($3.00).

The market is popular and crowded so get there early to ensure the best choices since the produce vendors tend to run out of stock near the end.

    Windward Mall: Going Mall-ing

by Rixie Updated Sep 6, 2010

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The closest mall is the Windward Mall in Kaneohe, about 10 minutes away from Kailua. You can find the usual stores there, like Sears, Macy's, Radio Shack, Borders Books, as well as Hawaiian specialty shops like T&C Surf Designs, Local Motion, and Little People Hawaii.

Try Seeds 'N' Things on the second floor for Island snacks: crack seed (salted plums and cherries), preserved mango strips, rice crackers.

The only movie theater in the Kailua area is in this mall.

Kawapalai Market: Since 1927: A Beachside Corner Market

by AKtravelers Written Jul 15, 2008

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Kawapalai Market, at the beach yerminus of Kailua Road, is an icon. If you need a sandwich, drinls (including wine or beer), coffee or even a few souvenirs and you need it only steps from the beach, go to this old (by Hawaii standards) standby. The prices are slightly expensive as you'd expect from both a corner market and a beachside shop, but you can't beat the convenience and the old Hawaiian ambiance. You can even eat burgers at the picnic tables outside on weekends!

    The Swap Meet

by berkeleybear Written Feb 4, 2008

Did you forget to bring a clothing item or other accessory with you? Or perhaps you need a quick way to get some inexpensive souvenirs. Although I would not spend all day or multiple days here, I would have to say that the swap meet by the Aloha stadium meets alot of convenient needs. I got cool long shorts for $2.

    Foundwood: Beautiful Wood Cutting Boards

by GracesTrips Written Mar 6, 2016

I bought a beautiful wood cutting board made from monkey pod that I will use as a cheese board for parties. Everything was beautiful. This was located at a farmer's market at Kailua Elementary School but I'm sure you can find where they will be next by checking out their internet site or Facebook page. I like buying souvenirs like this because I will use it and remember how I found it!

What?! Kailua has a Whole Foods! How can that be? I live in Southern California in the city of Glendora. I'm sure the city I live in has more people in it than Kailua has and we don't have a Whole Foods. And, this is an special Whole Foods because they have fresh fish!

There are all kinds of places to shop in Kailua - everything from a Goodwill store to pricey beachwear boutiques. I was surprised to see that there was even a small Macy's in town.

If you want a habitable house in Kailua, prepare to spend more than $900,000, as Hawaii has the most expensive housing in America.
