It was a little disturbing to me how difficult it was to find the Confederate Cemetery in Alton. It's located in the hills of the town, off US 67, but there are no signs, and when I stopped at a gas station, no one there had heard of it. Fortunately, they had an old city map on which the cemetery is marked, and I was able to figure out my way there.
The cemetery is an open field with the only marker being this obelisk. The obelisk is marked with a plaque, and with the engraved names of hundreds of soldiers who are believed to be buried here. During the Civil War, thousands of prisoners of war died from epidemics that swept through their camps. Here at Alton over 1300 Confederate soldiers were killed by smallpox and other diseases.
