Belleville Things to Do

  • Illinois' Longest Main Street

Some claim that this is the world's longest main street. I'm not sure if this is entirely accurate, but I do know that it is the longest in Illinois. It is officially 9.2 miles long . It is your typical small town street, lined with schools, churches, and pubs. The downtown area is especially nice. Plenty to do. Just start driving until you find...

  • SkyView Drive-In

One of the few remaining Drive-In movie theaters, SkyView is one of my favorite things in Belleville. For only $8 a person, you can enjoy 2 newly released films. When we were broke in Highschool, we used to sneak people in in the trunk; but have gotten a little old for that. You can also bring in your own food and coolers. This is a great place for...

  • Eckert's Country Store & Farm

Eckert's “pick-your-own” orchards feature different fruits and vegetables each season. Picking your own pumpkin just before Halloween can be a great family experience. Also, the country store makes some great homemade apple cider.

Belleville Restaurants

  • Great Wine, Ambience and Food

I have no idea how I lived so close to this place for the past year and a half without going there. I've now been twice in the past week. This place is in the Main Street District in Belleville and it reminds you of an old house (though its in an old downtown building) as it winds its way to a back patio complete with a brick fired oven where they...

  • Good Food and Cheap

Great little place if you're looking for something cheap and tasty. Looks like it might turn into more of a festive place towards the end of the night so if you're into that sort of thing go late, if not, go early. The Cadillac was very good. Its basically a roast beef sandwich that's probably as good, if not better, than any I've had before.

  • Delicious Soups

Walking through the grounds here, you can work up a good appetite. The restaurant at Our Lady of the Snows has a deee-licious lunch menu. They have eight different soups, rolls and a salad bar and it is all you can eat, for less than $10.00 (not counting a beverage). The service is excellent, helpful but not obtrusive. The last time we were here,...

The metrolink is a railway system that runs from St. Louis to Scott Air Force Base in Belleville with plenty of stops along the way. With multiple stops in Belleville, this is a great way to travel to places in St. Louis, like Lambert Airport. I believe that it costs $2.00for a one-way ticket. It was cheaper before gas went up so much. Still a great way to get to and from Mardi Gras or Cardinals games without the pain of traffic.

This place sells original t-shirts that represent Belleville and the towns surrounding it. They have some pretty clever ones too. Fun souvenir for anyone who is from Belleville or just visiting.

Belleville Local Customs

  • Annual Chili Cook-Off

Every October, Bellevillians gather downtown to partake in the Chili Cook-Off. This is the perfect event for anyone who loves chili and beer. And who doesn't. You can buy samples from each stand for only $.50. Many stands benefit charities or the local fire and police departments.

  • Stag Beer

I've never met someone who loves Stag, but if you do, you'll find plenty of it in Belleville. There used to be a Stag Brewery here and you can still find the beer in many of the local taverns and supermarkets. Believe it, or not: During the late 40's and early 50's, Stag actually outsold Anheiser-Busch products in the St. Louis area.

  • Art on the Square

Art on the Square ranks amoung the best art festivals in the country. Every May, over 45,000 people flock to downtown Belleville to view the work of outstanding artists and fine craftsmen. This is a must for any art lover. It is located at the Fountain at the intersection of Main and Hwy 159.
