Carbondale Things to Do

  • Shawnee Adventure Guides

Shawnee Adventure Guides is Southern Illinois' premier guiding service. They offer guided rock climbing, rappelling, backpacking, hiking, kayaking, and canoeing.

  • Fishing

A few great spots for bass fishing: Devil's Kitchen Lake -- A lot of bass around the rocky bank near the dam. The best time to catch the big ones are around dusk. Jig head lure with colorful(preferably yellow) fur works excellent. Little Grassy Lake -- Like the name suggested, there are lots of underwater grass surrounding the lake. Worm lure is...

  • Wineries Galore!

If you come to visit Southern Illinois, you must give our local wineries a try. The wine industry in our area is growing fast, both in size and notariety. We have some wonderful wineries. I particularly recommend Von Jakob (off Route 147 South) and Blue Sky Vineyards (south of Carbondale off Giant City Road). Most of the wineries are within 15...

Carbondale Restaurants

  • The Best Food

Tom's is a short drive north of Carbondale in Desoto. When I was young, it was noted for its steaks and frog legs. It is now a gourmet restaurant, with a European chef, and without a doubt serves the best food in Southern Illinois.

  • Don't miss the good food and nice people

The first business was built in 1955 by James Campbell. The hotel was destroyed by fire in the early 1860’s. Then it was purchased in 1870 to build a new story hotel called the “Newell House Hotel.” The building was constructed in 1871-72.The building was purchased by James Pease in 1899, and remodeled with a new Italianate-inspired design. The...

  • Great Margaritas (and food)!!

This is a great place to go for Mexican food in our area. It's a great atmosphere, acceptable for families, and also lively enough for a party. The food is a great value (portions are huge!), and the margaritas are the best in town. Literally! Tres Hombres was voted #1 in Mexican food this year!

Carbondale Nightlife

  • Bars and parties: Party City

by maggielou Written Sep 7, 2003

Pinch Penny Pub is a popular bar, make sure to bring ID, you must be 19 or older to get in.
For some good old fashioned college parties, Head over to Cherry St. or College St. Thursday-Saturday nights. There's bound to be beer somewhere. Beware in the early fall, police are especially active, and tickets can get pricey.

Dress Code: Whatever you wanna wear. At the bars, dress to "impress" (get picked up)

Carbondale Shopping

  • Bargain-shopping in the 'Dale

This is a great little resale shop for women's and men's clothes. It's a reasonably-priced place to buy brand-name clothes, shoes, and accessories. They also feature accessories and jewelry by some local artisans, which you won't find anywhere else! They're friendly and helpful, too. Look for items by local artisans, such as hand-made jewelry or...

Carbondale Warnings and Dangers

  • Don't Drink and Drive!

by schmielt Written Jan 26, 2006

I'm not kidding! Carbondale rakes in a LOT of money off DUI tickets, so be careful! Don't assume the cops here have other things to worry about, because they don't! Especially if you're on the streets between 9:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m., you're a target.
