Freeport Things to Do

  • Outdoor family fun - putt putt, paddle...

Krape Park is a family favorite! A gorgeous waterfall greets you at the entry, and Yellow Creek flows through the park, offering paddle boat, canoe & kayaks in the summer & ice skating in the winter. There's a band shell for outdoor concerts, miniature golf course, sledding hill, old-time carousel ride, kid's castle playground, lots of picnic...

  • Debate Park

This bizzare, physically distorted statue commemorates the second of the famous Lincoln-Douglas Debates that occured around the state of Illinois during the 1858 heated Senatorial campaign. The "Little Giant" Stephen Douglas looks little indeed, a dead ringer for one of the Munchkins from the Land of Oz. Lincoln, who at 6'4" towered over the 5'1"...

  • The Skyscraper

I'm not sure what the city fathers (and mothers) were thinking when they approved the plans for this lone tower in the center of town. Sticks out like a sore thumb. And its not like land was at a premium so that building up, rather than out, was a necessity.

Freeport Off The Beaten Path

  • The view from my backyard

This is what I looked out at when playing in my backyard as a child. It was great fun to go into the cornfields and build forts.

  • Factories (2)

The companies that were operating when I grew up were called: Micro Switch, Kelly Springfield Tire, Furst-McNess, Rawleigh, Newell, Structo, Burgess Battery and I am sure there were several others I don't remember.

  • Factories (1)

The heart and soul of towns like Freeport. Without the big factories, these towns would have been no more than small agricultural towns. This photo shows Micro Switch, Plant 1. I worked one summer at this factory. Hard monotonous work and long hours. I am glad to have spent only one summer here, but for many people it is their everyday reality.

Freeport Favorites

  • Freeport Senior High School

Built back in the day when high schools were designed to look like high schools.I spent three years in this building and did not have to repeat any grades. All in all, I'm pretty satisfied that the high school experience is now but a distant memory.

  • Churches and Taverns

Almost every street corner in the older part of town has a tavern and almost every block in the same parts of town has a church. Church on Sunday morning and a drink after work all week long.Lots of people of German heritage in this part of Illinois. They like their beer and they like their churches.

  • Krape Park

Not only a park, but also a palindrome. Probably the nicest place in town. Summers will find many folks enjoying family reunions; kids playing on all sorts of playground equipment; there is an old style mechanical carousel; plenty of ducks to feed; Sunday night concerts at the bandshell....well you get the idea. Small town living at its best.
