We just did a day trip to Indi . did the zoo and a nice park .. wanted to try a nice place for dinner. We'd read this steak place was highly recommended .. and was famous for it's shrimp cocktail. We both had the steak .. filet and shared a shrimp cocktail. We like some heat to our cocktail sauce and knew this was know for being spicy but it was so spicy it just put our nose on fire. The sauce comes already on the shrimp .. in the future I'd make sure they put it on the side and brought out some catsup to tone it down ... just too hot to be good. The filet and meal was good.
this is a nice place .. nice atmosphere .. nice night out. Just beware of the cocktail sauce.!!!! My husband took his boss here and he warned him about the heat of the cocktail sauce but he blew off his warning .. he LITERALLY jumped out of his chair at the first bite.
St. Elmo's is an Indy tradition. Been there for over 100 years. Known for great steaks & furnace hot shrimp sauce. We had not been there for years, but had visiting relatives from New England and wanted to show them a famous place. First thing that wasn't "right" was when the entrees were served, the 2 men in the party were served first!!!!!!! This is a no brainer...no matter the year, courtesy says women should be served first!! Then when the 2 women's plates were presented, the wrong sides were on the wrong plates!! Waiter took them to close sideboard & just switched the steaks. One of the men ordered the lamb porterhouse "extremely rare" & was assured by waiter it would be red & cool in center. When he cut into it, was medium well!!!!!!! This was kinda rectified as waiter brought him another 1/2 order cooked the way it should have been. All in all, to spend $200 for a meal for 4, it was NOT WORTH IT!!! Steaks were very good & 2 of the 3 baked potatoes were excellent. Third one was waayyy overcooked. If you want to pay for atmosphere & to say you have been there, go ahead & spend the $$$$$, but I will never go back.

I was just at St. Elmo's last night after the RCA Tennis Championship. We arrived almost at closing but they seated us (a party of 10) as though it were much earlier in the evening. Now I myself don't like eating a 10 oz or 14 oz steak at 10 in the evening- but it did not seem to bother my colleagues who not only eat steaks but had the shrimp appetizer (your mouth will be on fire- but a must), the wedge salads, steaks and espressos. We also sampled a few (ok many) bottles from the amazing wine list (noted by Wine Spectator). One of my fellow diners was amazed that they had an entire page of pinot noirs.
Our waiter told us that there are 5 dining rooms. The service was wonderful! Be sure to make a reservation - especially during peak hours and race days.
Favorite Dish The menu is one page- and consists of a few steak choices- filet, tbone, etc. in a couple of sizes (10 oz, 14 oz). They also have some seafood appetizers (they are famous for their shrimp cocktail) as well as some seafood entrees. I also noted one chicken offering. They have a number of salads- house, wedge and tomato for those who want some green with their meat!
Definately go on an expense account as a meal is quite pricey.
St. Elmo's is the who's who of Indianapolis dinning, and perhaps Midwest Steakhouses. Founded in the dawn of the 20th century, St. Elmo's has been traditionally known for its classic service, dining experience and exemplarily foods as for its sometimes posh/celeb clientele. The famous faces you will sometimes see frequenting the tables of this mahogany wooded establishment are only rivaled by the well-known sole appetizer, the shrimp cocktail. And while these four pieces of seafood covered in a spicy horseradish are indeed an important aspect of any St. Elmo's experience, its the cuts of meat that make the hot-spot Indianapolis' best steakhouse and restaurant.
Reservations are strongly recommended for this store on Illinois and Georgia. So to is an outfit slightly better than business casual. But don't be alarmed by any stuffiness, there is very little, these unwritten rules provide ample ability for the most elegant and rewarding dining this side of Chicago.
Favorite Dish The aforementioned shrimp cocktail is an essential part of any meal at St. Elmo's, but no visitor comes just for the aperitif. As I am not as interested in steakhouses as I am more European restaurants I tend to lean more for the smaller cuts, and the New York Strip of 16oz. is my favorite. They also offer glorious cuts of prime rib, filet mignon, porterhouse and rib eye, all of which have been greeted with moans of joy from my dining partners.
St. Elmo's also has a wine menu unequaled in Indianapolis. Touting over 20,000 domestic and international bottles, anyone can find something to treat their tastes or wallets. While some may choose the more conservative route of the Chateau Souvrain, Alexander Valley at $38, more heavy-walleted guests may pursue the Pauillac, Chateau Lafite Rothschild closing at $8,500. The waiters are practically bon vivants in their knowledge of the store's wines, and would gladly help in the guests’ choice.
This place is a landmark in Indy.If you want to see someone famous during an important weekend,you should come here.
This is a small,quaint Italian restaurant that has great food at a reasonable price. There is never a wait.

I was only in Indianapolis for a short time, but I had a chance to visit it's finest restaurant. St. Elmo's Steak House, which is named for the patron saint of sailors.
Not only is St. Elmo's in it's original location, it still as many of the original fixtures which gives dining here a certain charm. There is a 20,000 bottle wine cellar so, I'm sure there is something to suit every taste. Also, along the corridor to the dining area, there are pictures of all of the celebrities that have stopped in throughout St. Elmo's history.
Favorite Dish The shrimp cocktail is THE BEST! I was never a fan of horseradish until I had St. Elmo's shrimp cocktail...be careful with it though, too much and you'll lose a few tastebuds!
