Stay away from The Court of Two Sisters. It has a pretty courtyard, but the food is terrible.Don't bother with tours.Hop on th street car for $1.25 and see it yourself. If you want to take a cruise on the Mississippi or into the Bayous, choose a short cruise and don't bother to eat on the boat. There are too many great restaurants in the city to bother with some slop that has been reheated for your dining pleasure.Be careful at the casino. If you want to see it and try your luck, bring a small amount and don't expect to win.The casino has been having alot of financial problems from the beginning. It is trying to recoup its investment. That doesn't bode well for you.
If you're walking in the French Quarter and somebody says
'i'll bet you $ that I can tell you where you got dem shoes',keep walking. He'll tell you that you got dem wherever you happen to be standing and take your
    money.

No trip to New Orleans would be complete without a local trying to get some of your money. When someone approaches you with, 'I'll bet you five dollars I can tell you where you got your shoes?' Keep walking. When you challenge them, they will say, 'You've got them right here, on Bourbon St, New Orleans!' Also, random people may help you with baggage at the train station (competely without your asking) and expect money.

The local ATM's, Mac Machines (whatever you call them in your area), are rip offs. Unavoidable rip offs. They charge upwards of 3 dollars as a service charge, so be forewarned. A little cash here, a little cash there, and the next thing you know, you've just lost twenty bucks in service fees. Just plain annoying.

BY FAR - THE GUMBO SHOP IN THE FRENCH QUARTER
THIS IS NOTHING LIKE REAL GUMBO, AND IT IS OVERPRICED. MOST FRENCH QUARTER RESTAURANTS ARE, UNFORTUNATLEY, AND MOST HAVE LOUSY LOCAL FOOD, UNLESS YOU GO FOR THE REAL GOURMET EXPENSIVE UPSCALE PLACES LIKE BRENNANS.

    Did.ya.eat.yet?

by cynthi Updated Sep 11, 2002

People in Louisiana LOVE to eat, and it no wonder why... our food is just so good! Remember that the REAL FOOD is not going to be found along the riverwalks or at the "cajun" cafe's in the mall. Also, the real stuff is pretty much in South Louisiana. You can't go to Louisiana without trying the local fare, so make sure you get it right. Make sure you find a good restraunt to go to and don't get sucked into the hot and spicy claimings in an area where all you see are tourists (I'm really thinking New Orleans right now).

Fun Alternatives: So now that you can't eat on the riverwalk anymore, my suggestion is to ask people what they think. Ask your hotel staff, friends, or even random people off the street for a suggestion for some authentic Louisiana Cookin'. The people of Louisiana are friendly as a whole, especially when it comes to food (as long as we aren't talking about sharing, although special exceptions are made for tailgating).

The real deal... you have to know where to find it
