Nantucket Island Things to Do

  • Outdoor fun at the Maria Mitchell...

Some of my favorite things to do on Nantucket are the programs at the Maria Mitchell Association, including their astronomy programs at the observatory, ecology beach walks, and aquarium programs.

Named and founded in honor of America’s first professional female astronomer, The Maria Mitchell Association includes two observatories, the historic birthplace of Maria Mitchell, a beachfront aquarium, a natural science museum, a science library, and administrative offices. In addition to historic preservation and conducting natural science and astronomical research, the MMA offers a full line-up of programs for all ages and especially fun for the young. All facilities are open during the summer, and many remain open year-round.

Marine Ecology Walk led by MMA Aquarium staff. This is one of the observatories, built in 1908. This is the aquarium on Washington Street.

Nantucket is a small town and so one can see all the restaurants in a short time by walking around and checking the menus posted outside each restaurant.

Also, a restaurant guide is published that I picked up where the ferry arrives, though I would guess should be available at various places.

    Ferry from Hyannis

    by where2next Written Aug 24, 2003

There are two ferry companies that leave out of Hyannis. There are a couple other ports that travel to Nantucket. The boats leave every couple hours. There is a slow (older) and fast (newer) ferry. The prices are about twice as high for the fast (1 hour vs. 2 hours). Some folks will take their cars though this is expensive.

    New, Faster Ferry
