    some cautions necessary

by davecallahan Updated Apr 20, 2007

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Binghamton's crime risk is rated as less than average which means it is safer than an average town in New York. The most prevelant crime listed was larceny (theft).
Having said that, there still are 199 registered sex offenders in Binghamton (see website below).

Some extra caution should be used if you are traveling with children or are a woman traveling alone. Visiting touristy places during the daytime probably poses no problem but your risks go up considerably if you are out late at night and/or in an unfamiliar place in the city.
To prevent from being a victim to theft, remember to lock car doors and put valuables out of sight in a safe place.

Use this information to help yourself to have a happy and safe visit to Binghamton.

Binghamton is called "The valley of shadow of death." This place may have a good and cheap college and that about it.

Also it has too many bad area to list, we'd be here all day. Many of the poor people from NYC come here for the easy D.S.S. Many of the people are low grade. BUT not all

Binghamton has nothing to do unless your looking to get drunk or high. If you've got kids, use your head and take them elsewhere.

The schools are crap and you'd have to drive atleast two hours in any direction to find something worth your time to do. So if you have a head and you like to use it, then I would hope you'd run as fast as you can.

Also some say the water was cursed by Indians. And that if you drink it, that you'll be stuck here no matter how hard you try to leave. As far as for me I didn't grow up here, THANK GOD, but the curse seems to be holding up no matter what.

Honestly, I am not superstitious or anything, but this curse may be true. All my drive and passion for leaving Binghamton has vanished. Binghamton is not a recommended tourist area. There is little to do in terms of touristy things, and also, the weather tends to be cloudy and damp. The people here are not your run of the mill New Yorkers. I call Binghamton, The "Dirty South" of New York, because the people here are generally poor and rude. Good Luck if you gotta come here anyway!
