    Esperanto: Lunch in the Village

by toonsarah Written Nov 12, 2008

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Looking for a light lunch in Greenwich Village we were attracted to this attractive and relatively spacious café. With its scrubbed wooden tables and a comfortable looking sofa (unfortunately already taken when we arrived!) it seemed like a good place to hang out for a while, and so it proved to be. Most of the clientele appeared to be students, almost surgically attached to their laptops (the café has free WiFi) but we prefer to go places that are used by locals and as the Village is home to New York University that was fine with us. Looking around, I could see the attraction – this is clearly the sort of place where no one minds if you buy one coffee and sit for hours, and in that respect it felt more European than American.

Favorite Dish: There was a wide range of sandwiches to choose from. I settled on avocado and salad and Chris went for the turkey Dijon. Both were very good. With sparkling water for both of us the bill came to $15 with tax. The service was friendly, and when we left and paused to take photos outside the waiter came out and offered to take a picture of the two of us.

I’ve seen a few reviews on the web complaining that the service here is slow. Well it certainly isn’t fast but it’s not that sort of place. If you’re in a hurry go the two golden arches somewhere, not a rootsy little Continental style café ;-)
