Dean and DeLuca Tips (4)

Dean and Deluca: Food, glorious food

Dean and Deluca is a Cadillac among NYC epicurean emporiums and one look at their gorgeous displays of gourmet edibles - and their price tags - will leave you gasping. Budget travelers, keep a firm grip on your credit card as this is dangerous territory for penny-pinchers. A purveyor of high-end foods at this flagship location for over 30 years, they specialize in premium-quality cheeses, meats and seafood, fine wines, artisan breads, pastries, pasta, produce, condiments and kitchenware. You may also order pre-prepared hot meals, soups and salads at this location and any of several cafes scattered throughout Manhattan.

Yes indeed, this is fancy at its schmanciest with an environment and staff oozing serious attitude. We ordered coffee and a couple of expensive cookies from a chilly waitperson and made for the door. Still, it's a NYC institution, fun place for a lookabout and the cookies were very good.

Warning: Although it's not posted, they evidently have an issue with cameras and a cranky floor person is apt to give you grief for a snap or two to share with your VT friends. I took mine very discretely, without flash and virtually no one in the place, and got nailed by one of their Mr. Hairy Eyeballs.

What to buy The pastry case was to die for and won't completely break the bank so buy cookies or something flaky with a nice cup of joe, just to say you did.

What to pay Whatever you have left in your 401

Deal & DeLuca: Plethora of freshness

Dean & DeLuca is an institution in world of delis and grocery stores. A store worth visiting for everyone interested a bit of food, but a must for all gourmands visiting New York City. Dean, DeLuca and their staff have been serving gourmet food from all over the world over 30 years now.

The store is located in NYC downtown in SoHo district, next to a set of fashion concepts stores. The bulk of the floor space is occupied by normal grocery store that sells everything and between in food. There are several stalls for fresh meat, fish, sushi and so forth.

There is also a small place for eat the stuff inside the store, but it is usually quite crowded and there are no seats -- to get people out quickly for releasing some space for the next ones.

Dean and Deluca: Shopping and a coffee break

Dean and Deluca is an amazing shop, first opened in SoHo in September, 1977. There are now several stores in NYC, and more in other states of the USA.

It sells kitchenware, gifts, fine foods and wine.

We visited the SoHo branch, where they also have an espresso bar with a huge array of delicious looking cakes and other evil goodies.

What to buy All the fresh food items they sell look amazing - you can pick up ingredients for a meal, or buy a ready made gourmet dinner. Then there are those cakes and pastries that I mentioned earlier.....YUM!

The kitchenwares are all good quality and very stylish - in fact everything in this shop is stylish.

What to pay Okay, it is not the cheapest place, but you pay for quality, right!??
