West Point Things to Do

  • West Point Coach Tours

We ( Chinggis and Borte) highly recommend this guided tour on a coach bus inside the US Military Academy . There is a one hour tour for about U$ 14 dollars and there is 2 hour tour for U$ 16. The West Point Tourist Information Centre is just located outside the main gate of the US Military Academy about 200 metres away. If you are a foreigner it is...

  • Military Museum - West Point

Welcome to West Point's one and only military museum named Olmsted Hall. The museum is located outside of US Military Academy gate, just behind the West Point Information centre. This is a place to visit for anyone whose got the interest of United States military history. The museum is not really the biggest military museum we have seen compared to...

  • Visit the West Point Museum

The West Point Museum, located just outside of the gates of the academy, has many excellent exhibits of both West Point and Military history. You can see everything from uniforms to weapons to battle scene mock ups.The building has many items that will really give you a perspective on what the military is about and also make you think about all the...

  • Tour the academy

We took a bus tour around the academy. The advantage of doing so was getting expert commentary on the various buildings, statues and history of West Point. The grounds and campus are expansive, so there is plenty to see.The fortifications at West Point were designed in 1778, and Thomas Jefferson officially established it as a military school in...

  • U.S. Military Academy at West Point

We got to the West Point Museum early in the morning and missed the first 2 hour tour. The line was :30 and we were the last for the second tour. There are only two 2 hr. tours daily. We easily killed three hours waiting for our tour. We explored the museum, gift shops, town of Highland Falls and the Visitor Center. There were photo ops. a :20...

  • West Point Museum

Being so close to home for me I used to come here on school field trips all the time. We never did go look at the small weapons for some reason. It is a very interesting look at the history of West Point as well as war itself. The museum is on the small side as far as museums go but has a vast collection that is rotated for showing. Admission is...

  • See the Academy in the Fall

Our favorite time to visit is in the Fall. The campus is gorgeous with the brilliant colors of autumn this time of year. Take time to take it all in--it will thrill your senses. The wide views of the river and beyond make it a popular destination. The campus was studded with cannons of various types--I think my husband and grandson examined each...

  • Take a Tour of the Military Academy

When we took our tour, the cadets were outside running the paces! It was interesting hearing about traditions of the school and seeing sights that were important to the history of the academy. Expect to see lots of artillery on the grounds!Bus tours of the academy are available. A one hour tour from April-Oct. begins at 9:45 am with the last tour...

  • See The Visitor Center

The visitor's center at West Point is a good place to get a snap shot of cadet life--a room the actual size of the real thing is on display. Learn about the life of a cadet! There is an extensive gift shop and restrooms located here.Hours are 9:00 am-4:45 pm daily. Westpoint Tours takes you by bus through the grounds and stops at a few places, but...

West Point Restaurants

  • Historic

Scenic & beautiful restaurant on the grounds of West Point. Service was excellent, food was good & relatively reasonable. The views of the Hudson River are the rage here! Brunch buffet is reasonable & good. I have enjoyed the fresh seafood dinners.

  • Outside West Point Gate

Small ice cream shop with some West Point souvenirs. Line moved quickly and the tables outside turned over as well. Boys noticed that the servers did not wear gloves & handled the ice cream & money with the same hands. However, it didn't stop us from enjoying... Delish flavors, hot fudge was amazing, no one was disappointed nor was a drop left...

  • Casual near West Point

Typical pizza shop. We were the only ones at a table but cadet's & children ordered pies & slices to go. We ordered and waited about :30 for lunch. We were given 3 out of 4 lunch orders. Bathroom could have been cleaner & paper towels would have been nice. Teens said it was the worst & would never go back. I ordered a gyro which never came. My...

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The deep sense of Tradition can sometimes create upperclassmen with an attitude problem. I remember more than one time listening to them complain and show contempt for enlisted men (the backbone of all our military branches), and non-West Point trained officers.

West Point Warnings and Dangers

  • HWY 9W Scenic Route Beware of...

This is a suprisingly beautiful scenic drive heading towards Newburgh from West Point..or to West Point depending on how you are travelling.. The natural reaction is to look especially if you have never driven on this road before and as we were visiting West Point for the first time we had no idea this road existed.. An Unbelievable scenic drive,...

  • I'm not sure about the...

I'm not sure about the specifics, but my understanding is that security around West Point is higher now after 9/11. I think they are probably stricter about tours and letting people onto the grounds, so you may want to call the visitor's center a few days before you go.

West Point General

  • View from Trophy Point

Pre-9/11 we were able to drive around the West Point campus and explore the area, which is quite extensive and fascinating. The cemetery, which I found most interesting, is not included in the bus tour, which is now the only way for visitors to see the West Point campus unless they have specific business on-site (ie reservations at The Thayer...

  • believe me when I say I was...

believe me when I say I was there. Here's a picture, taken in my dorm room, of me trying to look like a toy soldier. Seeing the late '70's rock bands UFO, and REO Speedwagon in Eisenhower Hall as a cadet. Try an imagine a rock concert full of guys (and a few gals) all with short military haircuts and most wearing uniforms similar to mine here...

  • Remember that many famous...

Remember that many famous Americans have graduated from its 'hallowed halls'. you can tell that West Point is proud of its alumni by the various monuments scattered about. Here's one dedicated to Douglas MacArthur. While I was a cadet, General Omar Bradley made a visit - with some full bird colonel pushing the general around in his wheel chair.
