    Tofthagen Library Museum

by Basaic Written Nov 2, 2015

The Tofthagen Library Museum in Lakota was built in 1927 using a donation from Amun Tofthagen who immigrated to Lakota from Norway. The buildings serves as both a library and a museum housing memorabilia like old photos and new items, other objects, and the highlight (certainly for me) a peace pipe smoked by Tofthagen with the great chief Sitting Bull. The building itself is a fine example of the Prairie School style of architecture and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Lakota is a small town of about 670 (down 14% since 2000) located along U.S. Highway 2 in Nelson County in Northeast North Dakota. Lakota was established in 1882 and was named by the territorial governor for the Lakota Indian Tribe. The railroad came the next year spurring more immigration into the town. Lakota is the county seat of Nelson County. Nelson County was established in 1883.
