Seminary Ridge Tips (2)

Seminary Ridge

The Lutheran Theological Seminary was in the center of battle during the first days of July. On day two the Confederates held Seminary Ridge; on the third day the Union soldiers held this high ground until the Confederates beat them back.

Seminary Ridge

Named after the nearby Lutheran Theological Seminary, Seminary Ridge sits on the western side of the battlefield. It was here that the Confederate forces made camp and directed a number of their attacks against the Federal troops located on the other side along Cemetery Ridge, especially Pickett's Charge on July 3rd. Today, the ridge is studded with many cannons (some even left over from the battle), stone walls made by the soldiers during those three days, and monuments dedicated to the Southern forces and commanders.

Just behind Seminary Ridge is Eisenhower National Historical Site, where ex-general President Eisenhower lived on and off during his presidency, and became his home after 1961. Seems appropriate for an old general to live on a battlefield, one as important as Gettysburg
