    Gettysburg and Potter County

by Basaic Written Sep 30, 2013

Gettysburg is a small town of about 1200 (down 13% since 2000) located along US Highway 212 in Central South Dakota. They like to advertise themselves as "the one without the battlefield". It is a sister city of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania (the one WITH the battlefield). Gettysburg is a friendly little town and is the county seat of Potter County. The original county seat was Forest City and when Gettysburg won an election to become the county seat, Forest City refused to release the records. The ensuing fued ended when 100 men from Gettysburg "stealthily" (quite an accomplishment for 100 guys) entered the town and confisctaed the records. The Potter County Courthouse was built in 1910 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
