Glen Rose is a very neat town of about 2500 located in Central Texas. The area was settled around 1859, and the town later became the county seat. Somervell County was first formed in 1875 and was named for Alexander Somervell a Texas soldier, statesman and pioneer. Court was first held in one of the local stores. This fine courthouse was built in 1893 using Native Limestone and the Late Victorian style of architecture. It was recently restored with an eye toward preserving the courthouse as close as possible to original.
I just loved the buildings and shops around downtown Glen Rose. Its very small but still quaint. The centrepiece of course is the courthouse - everything else encircles it. One thing you don't see is the presence of fast food chains to small the modest charm of this town.
The square has been quite a popular place for locals to gather since the late 1880's. Farmers would bring their stock animals and other produce to sell. They set up on the west side of the square where there was plenty of shade of old pecan trees.
This is a really different fountain in the shape of a star which sits out in front of the courthouse and beside the pavilion where the dinosaur track is imbedded.
