Buck-Saving tip: on weekends, the Metrô promotes its TurisMetrô initiative. These are 3-hour guided subway/walking tours, all departing from Sé Subway Station. Although comments are in Portuguese, it is a safe way to explore downtown without getting lost. Plus you only pay for the subway fares used. Saturdays at 9AM, Sundays at 9AM and 2PM. Arrive 30 minutes before scheduled time.
