Customs House Tips (4)

ALFANDEGA

ALFANDEGA means the customs and by chance the area was the first thing we looked at when taking our first walk in Manaus. At the time I didn't even know what these buildings represented and to be quite honest , up till today I don't know who had to pay customs and for what..... But these buildings date all from that Golden Age of Manaus on the verge of the 20th century plus/minus 10 years and therefore have historical value. There are also two other pictures here , one of the outside of the Municipal Market , a construction made out of pieces imported all the way from England and the other a pretty run down multistoried hotel with a green building in the front , saying : "Defensoria Publica" which means something like Public Defense , whatever this might be if located in a building like this.....

Customs House

The stone used to build the Alfândega was brought, stone by stone, from Scotland, mostly as ballast in the late 19th century.
