Planning a trip in 2011

by urbanhunter

When is the best time of year to visit Chengdu, especially to see Panda cubs if any have been born recently.
Apart from the Panda Breeding Centre, what other must see sights are nearby?
Thanks in advance for any top tips.

When we were there a few years ago, they did not let people see the very youngest pandas. The young ones in the images / videos were about 6 months old, if I remember correctly. My Chengdu page also covers off the Leshan Giant Buddha and Emei Mountain, both of which are very well known, as well as the pandas.

Chengdu is also the transfer point for most people heading into Tibet (which is why we were there).

Times change and there is a breeding center where if you donate a large sum of over one hundred dollars, doors will open up for you to feed and play with the Panda cubs..actually hold them....saw it on the travel channel not too long ago,
Cheers Tommy x

I was in Chengdu in April and there were many cubs to see. Yes, the very young ones are kept away from view - even the ones you can touch are not so very young.

The Giant Buddha at Leshan is also worth a visit either climbing down and up the stairs or viewing from the river.

If you like to check my tips you can get more information.

There's an interesting museum outside of ChengDu called Sanxingdui - Shang dynasty archeological artifacts. Wenshu Temple in ChengDu has very pleasant gardens and an outdoor teahouse. I got the "expensive" green tea and it was the best tea I've ever had. A highlight of my trip was Emei Shan: took the bus to the top and then walked down. I stayed overnight at one of the temples on the way down. (If you're really fit you can walk UP.)

Travel Tips for Chengdu

Home of the Cute Panda

by eho

Visiting the panda research centre was no doubt the highlight of my entire trip. I read that the pandas are most active early in the morning (before 10:30am). I got there late -- after the feeding time at around 11 am -- but was lucky enough to find the pandas playing with each other.
To go there, I took a bus to the north train station, then changed to the #9 bus and got off at Jiang Jun Bei (the turnoff to the research centre). From there I took a taxi to the centre (it is possible to walk the remaining distance). I was told that bus #302 will get you there (I did see bus stops with that number along the way); however, I could not find where that bus originated.

Chengdu Zoo

Sichuan is globally famous as the home of the Giant Panda, and as you might expect, the Chengdu Zoo features one of the best displays of these intriguing creatures in the world. The zoo also provides full information on international efforts to protect and preserve this endangered species.

Visit the Leshan Giant Buddha - 3

It can be quite warm in this lush area of the Sichuan Province and I suggest you take plenty of water, sunscreen, a hat and a day pack with you. The stairs can not only be quite arduous, the crowds can back up and you can be left standing on the stairs for up to 30 minutes before you reach the bottom.

After you enjoy the scenery at the bottom, and take numerous photographs, you start to realize that you have to climb the stairs back to the top….now that is another story.
