Train ride from Beijing to Lhasa

by ohaiyo

Hi Everyone,

I forgot to post these questions in my last posting.

Has anyone ridden the train from Beijing to Lhasa?

How long is the train ride and how much does it costs? My trip is in September.

Also, does anyone have any tips on how to deal with high altitude sickness?

Thank you

" does anyone have any tips on how to deal with high altitude sickness?"

Drink plenty of water and take it easy for a few days. If you get real altitude sickness, go to a lower altitude or your live could be in danger.

Also read my Warnings of Dangers tip on my Tibet page.

PS
I got up to 5008 Meters, over 16400 feet and did not have problems. But everyone is different.

PS
Lhasa is only 3,650 meters, about 12,000 feet.

I ride the train on the way back from Lhasa to Chengdu. You most likely will not get high altitude sickness as it goes up gradually and very long time ( probably 3days from Beijing). Few years ago when I flew to Cuzco Peru ( about the same altitude as Lhasa) I did get some mild altitude sickness at night during sleeping (sudden woke up with headache cold shivering like having flue) but on day time as walk around town it went away. It lasted for about 3 night. I went hiking up on Inca trail for 3days up to 5200 mtrs ( at Dead Woman pass), I never had any problem. I even slept well and more comfortable than in Cuzco hotel. Not to worry the train crews to Lhasa know how to deal with it they carry oxygen tank.

Travel Tips for Lhasa

You must not catch a cold...

by luke007

You must not catch a cold before you enter Tibeten Highland. You need not worry about your health if you have enough rest or donot act immediately when you arrive there.Drink water and sleep as much as you can. The sky so blue, so high, I have never seen before.Air is so fresh that it can wash my lung and clean my mind. Tibeten girls are so kind and thier singing and dance are so beautiful. Mountains, monks, temples,...all these made me exciting, also made cry. I'll never forget the wonderful trip.

Going to the toilet in Tibet

by duke0123

Trekking in Tibet and staying in a camp. Sometimes you have to go to the toilet and outside it's too cold and windy to do your needs.

In that case these small toilet tents are the solution. Dig a hole in the ground and build the tent, however this is mostly done by sherpa's who accompany the trekkers.

The people

by seratonin

When you`re travelling trough Tibet, you wil certainly meet the local people. In Lhasa itself, we`ve met Tibetians speaking English, so it is very interesting to accept an ivitation for drinking a yak butter tea with them (altough that tea is sometimes a disgusting thing :-0... ).
More difficult was the conversation with the people we met overland. Unfortunately there is often a language bareer ... But you will find ways to deal with that...

Drepung - the main Assembly Hall

by grets

The Main Assembly Hall (Tsokchen Lhakkhang) is the biggest building in Drepung at 4500 square metres. The interior is enormous and has a very serene atmosphere. There are 180 pillars supporting the roof, many of which are adorned with colourful cloth. The room is filled with sculptures and many chapels lead off the main room.
